Any thoughts?
I have a 1983 FJ60 (not sure how long ago the carb was rebuilt but was told it was, maybe 5 years)
I live at 7,000 feet
idles rough, it seems fine then 4 seconds later drops idle (sounds like idle drops as if compressor comes on or something similar) and then is rough for 4 or 5 seconds and then the idle smooths out. When above idle, runs good.
I have sprayed carb cleaner on the base of the carb and I believe I have fixed all vaccum leaks. The carb is desmogged. The vaccum I achieve is about 13 or 14 although it fluctuates as mentioned 1 inch up and 1 inch down, and doesnt hold still as mentioned above. I have vaccum guage up to manifold vaccum. when I give it the gas, the vaccum drops 5 inches and then rises 5 to 10 inches above the idle of 14 inches. I have read that the FJ60 needs 15-20 inches of vaccum. A friend then told me that at 7,000 feet, 14 was good? The idle is set at 900 rpm, and when it lowers to 500 the problem seems even worse. I actually have no more adjustment on the carb to lower the idle as the screw sits above the adjustment plate at 900rpms, the 500 rpm adjustment just seems to happen when this situation arises and the idle drops????
Does the carb need to be rebuilt?
The timing seems to only be adjustable within the curved slot of the distributor tightening bolt. The bolt is all the way to the top of the slot on the adjustment (at the distributor) and the dimple still does not quite line up with the TDC line on the flywheel. (I assume this is the TDC line). How do I know where 7 degress BTDC is (sticker in engine bay says supposed to be 7 degress BTDC). as I cannot see any markings on the flywheel?
Any thoughts? I get 14mpg but the lumping sound at idle bothers me.
