identifying a low range gear

a friend of mums is giving me a reconditioned low range gear he had done before he sold his cruiser. i have no idea of make or model (it was a 40) is there a way to ID the ratio, because if it's out of a 3 speed case, it's going in my truck, otherwise it's a spare
