I purchased a used fj 4 months ago ,I use my fj for in town driving only, one month ago I started to here a whining noise from the engine brought it to the dealer they said the pulleys were worn and replaced all 3.It is one month later and these pulleys have to be replaced again. The service guys has no explanation other that I bought the vehicle in the USA .I would appreciate any feedback you can provide me on this.I should also note that the parts are on back order, don,t know If that is evidence of a much larger problem.
Thanks

Sounds like the 'techs' are'nt actually doing a proper diagnosis. There is no good reason the pulleys should be wearing out that soon. Those are symptoms of a deeper problem. Consider going somewhere else if they can't find the source of the problem. Good luck man.:wrench:

This is odd? I have had my FJC for 23 months and 34K miles and have had no such issues - nor have I read of any or heard any reported by other owners I know in this time. It appears indicative of a much different problem. I agree with comment above - seek a second opinion.

i would look into the altanator sounds like it might be bad. read somewhere else that they dont hold up well to a lot of mud in them they do sit real low in engine compartment where any debris can enter them

Thanks for the feedback

Just got the fj back today ,service of the iddeler pulley done, tech says may have been a faulty pulley,I will wait to see if this one holds up.It comes just in time as we are receiving 50cm of snow over night.thanks paul h

I have had two fail in my Toyota history, but not for a new vehicle as you describe. The first one to fail was self inflicted due to to excess mud contamination, and the second one let go due to mileage (152000) ; ironically, this idler pulley for the A/C failed shortly after having the timing belt replaced and reassembly of the front end.

I'd have them show you the spec for belt tension. The techs are supposed to use a tool to measure belt deflection.

Hi, I just purchased a new FJ, I have only put about 100 miles on it and just last night I started to notice a very distinct whiny noise that starts when the engine is reved up to about 2k RPM. "Sounds kinda like a car in reverse" I don't know if I am being paranoid or if there is indeed a problem as I have never owned a vehicle with a V6 in it before. I am considering taking it in to get looked at, but would like to get afew opinions first.

I just had my 4th set op pulleys put on yesterday. Some were covered under and others were not ($600.00). It is an expected part of off-roading that they go out when not cleaned or maintained.

Bandi did a nice thread on FJCF about cleaning and greasing them.

What is up with the FJ and so many pulley problems? I have a slight whining noise that I can hear when I pull into the garage, so I hosed my engine bay and pullleys down w\ simple green to get any mud off them...seems completely clean, but I still hear a whine. I haven't done ANYTHING to cause a pulley failure >.<

I have 33k on my FJ and a definite loud pulley noise. Best guess is the A/C pump or the idler nest to it. I will find out Monday when I take it in to be checked for that and the engine bay bulges I have. I will post their findings.

Hm. Before my warranty is up I need to make a list of things that Toyota needs to check out. Don't we have our engine, tranny, pulleys and so forth under warranty for like 60k?
