Hey guys, anyone have an idea for this?
I have a '92 Cummins engine that has no glowplugs, it is TDI it's only cold-start mechanism is a retard of the timing pump and that is about it. So far it's started every mornging but sometimes it takes a few cranks. Once it gets real cold I am a little concerned. I'm not sure what Cummins did originally for this but I think it is a fuel warmer if I remember correctly. Anyone have any ideas? In the meantime I just keep a can of ether around but luckily haven't had to use it yet...

I htink a 13B-T or a 12H-T uses a inline air temp heater, is that right?

I think the Cummins have a heater grid in the intake (I'm pretty sure my '89 Dodge had that).

Yup, my HJ61 has the inline glow screan...but no glow plugs...same with my duramax i think??? Plugging in the block heater helps tremendously with cold starts

I would have thought that the 92 would of had a starting aid....I would check with the local dodge stealership to find out what would work and then go scrap yard hunting....

sorry, not really any help.

Interesting Andre,
i have a 92 dodge cummins 5.9 and it has glowplugs.
my 13bt has the glowscreen.
easiest would be the block heater. Personally i think the magnetic ones don't work as well but do work. go to napa and get the one that replaces a freeze plug on the block.... i put my block heater on a timer that kicks on 1 hr before i plan on leaving. saves me oodles of electricity useage.
go really fancy and get the webasto or espar....

Thanks for the replies guys...
It does have a block heater but where I have to park it at night I can't plug it in :( So that rules that out, I might maybe come up with some fancy timer or something along those lines especially if I can't get it to start. Today is the real test, it's freezing outside and the truck is under a foot of snow so we'll see ( I actually expect it to start... ...hopefully!). Yup no glow plugs, no place in the head for them either, just injectors! The pumo does have some sort of air temp measurement and retard function for cold starts. But I'm not sure how well it works. To this day it has not been an issue yet though, luckily... I think I will try that cold screen option would be a good one though... If anyone else has an idea let me know! I am going to start seeing what's out there for sure...

For you guys that put a block heater in your HJ61, is it the same one as in an HJ60?

not really... different plug sizes etc. for different blocks. Can be pretty specific.

Hey has any priced the webasto or espar heaters? I priced them in calgary and they are big bucks. Like 2300 or so CAD. So I guess unless you need a product like these( where a plug in is not there) its better to use a block heater. I don't have a place to plug in so this is why I was checking it out. I am a street parker. If anyone knows a cheap supplier for these heaters pls post.

The $2300 you mentioned is a little high. They are about $1100 for the 12 V one without the timer (timer is about $300). The 24 V one is a bit more, maybe $1300-$1400 without the timer, but you can run the 12 V one off of the centre tapped batteries.

Freightliner here in Calgary and Eskimo Refridgeration carry them, among others.

For the "street parkers" in all of us, as well as those occasions when you have to park for 10 hours in the middle of nowhere with no plug-ins (like me at work for example) the webasto is the only solution to you truck starting in -20.

Craig.

I will have to check with freightliner. The price I heard of 2300 was from a company called polar solutions I think, also in calgary. They are the dealer here. According to espar. I would like to find one in the 850 range. I don't have a plug in at all. So if it gets too cold to start I am hooped. Got super thin oil in now, so not had a problem to date.

It is stil freezing here in Utah. Only one day (two days ago) did it not start and it will only not start after sitting overnight on a cold night. I have a place to plug it in but that is the GF's parking spot under the car port (and she owns our place) so she was not the happiest when I was using her spot. I started carrying a can of ether. Cummins recommends ether for cold starting and boy it does work. Just a quick squirt and it literally fired right up. Pretty neat, the last section of my exhaust is about 10" long straight and it literally fires out perfect white smoke rings. But anywhoo, I have heard to check a tractor supply place because they have little ether systems that you plumb into your existing plumbing. You give it two pushes of a switch and it fires right up. This is a setup similar to a diesel Unimog for example. So I am gonig to look into this. Of course I'd prefer something electric but this might have to do as I'm trying to drive it as least as possible especially in crappy salt-covered weather...

Hi everybody!

dieselcruiserhead, there's a simple trick when you can't plug! You buy a jump start box, wrap bateries in batery jackets, with a 12v watlow (or other!) heating blanket at the bottom. You puty an intake air warming grid, and another blanket or other as an oil pan heater, and you plug all that onto the jump start box when you come down to start the car! And even better, if there's some juice left in it, you can help your bateries to start the car! At night you can put your jump start box back in charge! At the price they cost on amazon, you can even blow one a year!

Best regards.

Max.
