You must be rich! Those are nice but they are not cheap.

No, not rich. I have a cruiser!

Our instructor had one and it was nice. I didn't have anything else to compare to.

My desires are:

HF
Mobile
removable (face plate or unit itself)
Easy programming

General class awaiting call.

Sorry I never replied to your post in the other forum, got busy and forgot.

I think that radio is probably overkill for most of us. The price is certainly over the top for a starter unit. From reading here and other forums I'd say these are the basic featurs you should look for;
Dual band, 2M/440 MHz - because a lot of repeaters operate on 440 MHz but most guys use 2M for simplex (rig to rig) communication.
Remote face plate -because it gives you lots of installation options
50W tp 5W selectabler output power - so you can be heard from far away but not swamp out others when they are close.
Cross band repeat is nice but not often used by most operators.

If you like Icom you might look at the IC 208.
Yeasu has the FT -7800 which is also popular.

I've got an Icom 706MkIIG for the same reasons as you posted. I'd be nervous mounting it in an open truck though. Mine is remotely mounted and would be tough to find (I'm not telling where it is).
