My TechStream experince

Im in the UK but with a Japanese mode (JDM) Estima Hybrid 2011

Mini-VCI J2534 cable, firmware 1.4.1

Running 32-bit TechStream in a Virtual box
connect cable to laptop after the virtual box instance is up (Windows XP), but before starting TechStream

TechStream v12.20.24

From virtualbox image mentioned on these pages
If change the region and getting license expired, then need to edit the xx.ini file as per page 62/63 of these notes (Harald notes)

Region NorthAmerica – doesn’t detect my vehicle and no suitable one in pull down list (and although some seem to work)

Set to region Other
Detects my vehicle as Previa HV AHR20 (which is broadly correct)

Didn’t try Japan region yet

TechStream v18.00.008
Acquired from (cant remember, there was a .zip and a .rar, the .rar has the important .lnk files)
Installed in a virtualbox over the exist v12 copy

Need to start it via the Patch32bit.lnk to skip the licence check
(and/or maybe editing ini file might help if change region)

Set to Japan region
Detects my vehicle correctly – Estima HV AHR and then need to select model year

works well
incl live data
and smartkey programming

I am trying the installation of Techstream and a cable sourced via eBay, but the driver does not recognise the cable. Do I need to plug it into the car too for it to be identified or I can safely assume that the cable I received is bust ?

Update - The Windows XP virtualbox image works fine on my old laptop but wont boot properly on my new Win11 laptop (will boot in safe mode but that is too restrictive and small a screen)

No does not need to be plugged into the car to be identified
Are you using the virtualbox image
is virtualbox set to allow usb through, and ensure you only plug in the cable after the virtualbox image is running.

Do you have the MVCI/XHorse firmware update tool? Press Device Info button. Does that detect the cable and firmware v (usually 1..4.1) ?

And if not running in a virtualbox, and running direct on the laptop, then did you install the driver (some reports if tricky to get a 64bit OS to install the driver?)

I had the image installed in Virtualbox, although I had to use a Linux machine as on Win11 the simple fact to enable the pass-through of any USB device crashed the host with a BSOD.
Linux behaves well, and enabling the passthrough of USB devices allows to see the device, but the driver in the image is not installing.
I tried to download one from XHorse website, but it is not 32 bit.

so, I am in a bind

Anyone using TechStream for live data on a Hybrid system?
Especially a Hybrid that has a rear electic motor as well as the front one (front is MGR1 and MGR2, MGR2 being the front motor).
Im trying to find a way to monitor rear electic motor usage.
TechStera does show rear motor torque, but seems to rarely use it (only at initial pulling away from standastill.
Was expecting to see it used during high acceleration/sprited driving, but no sign of it.

Other OBD based motoring apps doe not show rear motor activity.

Original Toyota vehicle displays do show any 4wd layout and possibly show rear motor activity (but I dont have the orginal display unit)

Is there a way to use techstream without a laptop? Apologies if it's answered elsewhere, I haven't read all 64 pages of this thread.

I have a bluetooth obd2 scanner, but it doesn't show things like ABS light code and fuel trim numbers.

there are programs that would let you run an instance of "windows" on an android device ("Winlator" was the most prominent app that came up with a search), I'm sure there's some possibility of being able to run some kind of VM/windows simulated environment on an android tablet or phone... but then you have to deal with driver issues and getting your input to interface properly.

I was kind of wondering the same thing, since I've got a USB-C to OBD-II interface cable that I use with an app (TuneECU) on my phone to remap/edit my Triumph motorcycle's ECM, but I'd think if you can get it to work you'd definitely want a larger screened device than your phone. Interesting to think about, and I know there are a lot of programming communities out there that might love to tackle this kind of issue (more generally), but not sure what the overlap is with the TechStream-curious community.

I can't get Techstream to open. I'm not much of a computer person. I set up Virtualbox, downloaded a version of Techstream. Every time I try to open it in Virtualbox, it's "aborted." I get the following error codes:

Failed to open a session for the virtual machine TechStream 12.20.024.
Not in a hypervisor partition (HVP=0) (VERR_NEM_NOT_AVAILABLE).
VT-x is disabled in the BIOS for all CPU modes (VERR_VMX_MSR_ALL_VMX_DISABLED).

For anyone that is getting a Virtual Machine "Aborted" during startup of WinXP VirtualBox. The issue appears to be related to the VM harware settings. I just disabled the Audio for the VM and it works as expected. You may have to disable other hardware to get past the blue screen of death.

Hope this helps it worked for me and programmed my new key FOB ! FWIW I have no idea what this forum is .. I have a highlander :) and just was searching for the VCI cable software.

Very Best,

Steve

I was seeing this as well and searched this thread. If you disable your Wi-Fi on your Mac, it will not be able to check the version and it will run. There was mention of there being a config file that may only allow this a certain number of times, but it seems that you can reset that file.

Thanks! I’ll try that!

Hi gang, I'm reviewed a lot of the content here and I'm still stuck! I have managed to get windows to find my USB cable (Mongoose Pro, should be good cable, works on friends computer) but XHorse does not see my cable and then Techstream can't launch: Unable to connect to VIM. Thanks in advance, I have m2 Macbook running UTM downloaded from OP.

I was able to get it to finally work now on my M2 Macbook via UTM

@1emerson1 POST 1193 was the answer for me. Even though your cable is recognized by the Windows XP, Techstream needs to know what cable to use. Since you can't get into Techstream, you have to first go to the "Bin" directory, C:\Program Files\Toyota Diagnostics\Toyota Diagnostics\Teachstream\bin > select main menu > fill in required dealer and dealer code (I put random 123) > cancel registration pop up > Setup > select VIM (cable).

You can close the Main Menu and then enter Techstream via the desktop link.

HTH!! and thank you to everybody for show
get around the "Unable to connect to vim" error message by selecting the XHorse MVCI driver from the TIS main menu.

1. Within UTM, make sure you're passing your USB device to the VM. You'll see a checkmark next to the device.

View attachment 3565861

2. Navigate to where Techstream is installed - C:\Program Files\Toyota Diagnostics\Teachstream\bin

3. Open "MainMenu" application. You can disregard the registration window, click on "Cancel".

4. In the toolbar menu, click on "Setup" then "VIM Select"
