How to Mount 5-Gal Gas Can on Tacoma

Hi,

I would like to mount a 5-gallon gas can on the back of my 1998 Tacoma to extend its range. I've seen those nice dual-can mounts on the front of some jeeps in pictures on this forum.

I would need something nice that will take a lot of vibration, that will secure the can but will let one remove the can easily. I was thinking of mounting it on the back bumper. I'm not real keen on mounting the holder directly on the tailgate.

Can somebody steer me in the right direction here?

I mounted one of these in the bed of a truck, drilled a couple holes to strap then down, and it worked perfect.

I bought a 5-gallon plastic gas can like the one in the link you sent and all it did was seep and leak out the top. Not good at all for off-road use. Stunk up the entire inside of the bed (it has a shell on top.) I finally dumped the gas into the main tank and trashed the plastic can.

What I need is something that will withstand real off-roading without seeping or spilling. That means about $50 for a metal jerry-can but that's okay with me. I'll also need a reliable holder that won't fatigue and break 5 miles off the pavement.

Something that I can attach to the rear bumper without it looking like the one on Brother Bubba's old pickup...

First, there are no jeeps on this forum.

Second, do you have an aftermarket bumper? If not, don't even consider mounting something like that to a chrome bumper. Here's an idea for ya..

Your other options are to fabricate your own, or look into an auxillary tank. Hope that helps.

I have seen some outboard marine tanks take a beating (on the water)... this might be an idea..
They come in various sizes and shapes, and mounting systems... can even get a hand pump to fuel up the Toy with....

...That's the stock Toyota 15x7 spare steel wheel with a 32 x 11.50 Bridgestone Dueller M/T Tire on it.
