Jim mentions 200+ ft-lbs for the nut. The FSM for '75 (below) indicates 116-145 ft-lb, but includes a lock plate.

I've looked at the '66 and '72 engine FSM's, and they don't mention a torque.

Is the 116 - 145 ft-lb okay, or is there a 'Mud "service bulletin" that suggests the higher torque?

If the oil squirter gets damaged (how the fu...), don't bother with an OE replacement. Just make one from random allthread and ram it into the metric pipe thread of the timing plate. A glop of Permatex #1 will seal & loctite it in place. Probably.

Why is that oil squirter so difficult for people to get right?!?

Customer reports engine runs rough, has a rattle, may need tuneup.
Let's start with valve adjustment, hasn't been done for a couple of years.
Hmmm, valves are aren't sitting right on #2, can't get an adjustment. Need to pull the head to see what the seats look like.

Hey, where are you guys hiding?

Oh there you are. Can't hide from me!

The fix for this is a rebuilt later model 2F with SBC valve upgrade.

I had a valve disc break off in my original 2F. Just a freak thing I think. It was years ago, it didn't keep running and never started again. I can't imagine this guy actually having this motor run with 2 valves busted off. That's pretty crazy.

This is what I found when I opened up the original engine from my project. No piston or other head damage except rust. I'm guessing this truck sat with the hood open and that nice little funnel built in to the air filter housing let rain in through the carb and filled the ports that had the valves closed with water which later froze and broke the valves.

This failure was initially an exhaust valve that decided to part company from the stem. The engine was wound out on the highway when it let go, so it turned a few thousand more revolutions before it got pulled off to the shoulder. The bouncing exh valve broke the intake off while it was open. The 2 valves then pummeled the spark plug & piston. The engine also has coolant in the oil filter, indicating the possibility of an initial HG failure precipitating the overheated exh valve failure.

Bottom line: this 2F is now a paperweight.

what would you say caused that?
Trying to keep up with interstate traffic, w/ 4.11 gears and tiny tires. Exh valve was approaching redline temp and one just gave up after being hammered on its seat at 1600 beats per minute.

It is about 10 hours from my place to TLC Performance or 470 miles. 26 gallons @ $2.50 per gallon $65.00 x 4 = $260.00 + 4 days vacation (free) + hotel x2 @ $160.00 = $320.00, plus $100.00 for food x 2 = $200.00......$780.00 to get my engine to and from someone that knows what they are doing..........decisions ...decisions

Dood-This is like your wife talking. Just go. It's a motor and the soul of your truck.

I’d make the drive. Cheap piece of mind in my opinion. If you ever decide to sell the truck knowing that Jim built the motor would add a lot of value.

You cannot ascribe a direct value to the face-time of meeting Jim, but IMO the indirect value is substantial. I have always recognized the ‘added’ value of meeting people directly (learned it from my father)so I would STRONGLY RECOMMEND taking the trip over an impersonal shipping arrangement if you can do it.

Does Jim do on-site “vacation” trips? Free food and room & board included:D

I’m guessing a lot of these “issues” apply to 1F engines?
