Nice 182! @greenbeast Are you a Commercial Pilot?
Nope I’m private with multi, IFR and tailwheel.
Son working on his commercial right now in flight school.

We had few squawks as expected since everything new but will get them worked out.

at least Lake is open and not frozen.

@bobm Love that…there were parts in Vt where we lived that still had snow in May and the roads were just re-opening. Rt 58 from Montgomery Center to Lowell

Is this a modern root cellar?
Pic of inside? What all would you store in there?

Cheers

We may store some canned vegetables from garden but it’s not really deep enough to stay that cool.

It’s primary purpose is for Tornado shelter since we live right in middle of Tornado ally.

Originally slated for 8’x8’ there was pretty good wait list. With wife putting safe room in house I had to go smaller so we would have some protection.

So did you bury a couple of shipping containers?
Nope it’s a prefab concrete cellar as most are here in Oklahoma. Steel safe rooms are used a lot more now but I’m still partial to these types.

I’ve always loved the idea of burying a container or two for shelter for the long term. Maybe after house is built, talking about a man cave!

Due to slope I had to have 30 tons of dirt brought in so I could lessen the slope to put Bermuda down. Wife and I put down 3rd pallet today.now it’s water, water and water!

Last year we had debris in pastures from tornadoes that hit south of us. Thankfully no one was hurt. Sadly a married couple maybe 15 miles to east lost their life with tornado a couple months ago.

Better to be safe than sorry!

We may sit outside and watch a tornado approach (with beer in hand) but they do need to be respected!!
My mother inherited the family farm house which has a storm cellar. Like, yours, it's about half way buried with grassed slope on 3 sides. The two car garage is immediately adjacent so our typical tornado warning type weather MO was to hang out in the garage with one of the garage doors open so that we could go 4 steps and be in the storm cellar if needed. Fortunately we never once actually had to take those steps.

My wife and I have been in our house….the same house 45+ years with several changes along the way . We were thinking of moving 2 yrs ago and questioned where we would go based on climate, comfort and cost of living. Winter is no longer our friend so going back to Vermont was out. California..fires and earthquakes. Texas..too f’ing hot..so we said “what about Oklahoma, Kansas, Nebraska” ….tornadoes … that part actually scares us. I admire you guys and girls out there in defiance of these extremes. Did not know new houses must have a storm cellar.

I don’t see how we might beat the seasonal change we enjoy here on the east coast, reasonable weather mostly. The worst part is HIGH cost of living.

Read an article tonight I read said Colorado….#1. Problem will always be distance from our daughter who seems to demand taking care of us even though we don’t show any need for that!..yet
