i left coop door open last week, came to farm, chicken massacre, 6 dead, 1 injured, tried to Dr her up, died yesterday. 5 birds disappeared, 1 dead, 1 injured. not sure if it was owls, coyotes, or a dog. Wild dog hanging round since. time to SSS
Owls, Eagles, Coyotes, Fox, Coons, Bobcats, Fishercats, Weasals, Skunks, Otters, and the Neighborhood Dog which is the most likely KILLER. Tough owning Chickens 🐔🐣🐤🐥.

When they cut Ice on the laked years ago! In the 30s they stored in Ice houses and covered with hay and would last to July or September 😘.
Yeah they did that up here too, a bit further East at the mountains, I always wonder how many guys fell in the lake doing that?

Don't think they lost a lot! Cold was cold back then 🤔🧐😉. Just like this week. Blocks were 3 foot plus in thickness 🤔🧐😉. When I first moved up here, whole town was on lake in winter, partying with cars trucks and snow machines 🍺😏😳😲😘🐖👈. Now we all old 🤪
Yeah sounds like the lake we used to ice race the Datsuns on is hardly frozen this year, and that was early 90s we did that 🙄

We had similar happen when our chickens were a few months old. We were letting them free range during the day and putting them up at night. Pack of coyotes ran through about 10am one morning and snatched 4 of the 10. Broad daylight and very close to our house; very unusual for coyotes. Great Pyrenees was only 4 months old or so at the time so he was probably on the porch asleep at the time.

Our old house up in the mountain was a log cabin built in the late 1800s. The big shop we had was apparently the ice storage for the town at some point. We lived at 8,100’ in elevation

Lots of cool history in the Wild West back in the day.

Brings back those old memories. My wife and I had a 12” icicle hanging from the shower head since we let the old style tub with an overhead pipe drip to prevent freezing…yet, it froze inside. That was an 1860’s 1 room schoolhouse in Vt. It was converted into a small living space with a loft and ladder for the bedroom. It was also the 1970’s. It doesn’t seem to get that cold anymore there. -30F was a common event. That night it was -54F. Plenty of -20’s my brother in law tells me about. Fun times regardless.

You probably have seen these on the forum pages before…yes, that our drinking water melting circa 1975
