still looking to see if anyone has results on this or the hood vents
Ken we have guys running SC with and without hood vents with no overheating problems. Here in AZ the trick to being cool is the right fan combined with the properly set up fan clutch.
We monitored temps during CM2011. The SC'd guys ran water temps very close to the guys without SC in most conditions.![]()
Thanks Phil
I have no concern about internal engine temps. I keep my system in top shape and average 180 to 190 deg with no issues
I am more concerned with underhood temps external to the engine and thats what the vents and scoops address, at least I think thats what the target is.
I have been fine with my setup for over 5 years, would like to reduce the underhood temps to help the components that are there last longer.
Thats why I would like to see someone elses results before I cut a hole in my hood. Otherwise, its a waste of time.

The vents have made quite a difference. Over two years later and only benefits, no adverse side affects as had been the concern some had.
I ended up buying an STI hood scoop. I have to sort out the mounting still, but I recently finished painting it and clear coating it to match. One of my guys has a CNC machine and I'm working on a new, short coupler to the intake and a custom air to air intercooler that would work with the hood scoop (ala blarsen except without cutting up any OEM parts).
Towing my camper everywhere in the past year added new load, but the current system handles it and lowers the underhood temps (sorry no measured data, but you can see the heat waves spewing out of the vents). I passed a bunch of your front range brethren on the way back from CM, actually saw you getting on 70 as we were arriving Friday afternoon. I have no problem rolling with the camper (which is freaking heavy) maintaining 80-82MPH, AC blasting. Also, I'm monitoring engine temps with the Ultragauge as well as an RT modded temp gauge.
The IC will help with intake temps and gain back some of the lost power during hot temps from heated intake air as well as set me up for a smaller pulley.
Necessary? No, but I want more power to make the passes easier and I just like screwing with this thing...

I do have this scoop still sitting in my garage, thinking of doing that instead since I already have it and of course will face it backwards. less rain in the compartments and it would be directly over the hot engine stuff
So are those generic/universal scoop with 3M adhesive on the back functional? Or the bolt on (Subaru) scoop is the best choice?
Thanks!![]()
I don't understand mounting it backwards. Most every manufacturer in the world who currently do hood scoops face them forward (Subaru, Toyota, Nissan...) without issue.
I have the same future plans as Romer(mounting a suby scoop backwards)... I am looking to let air out not "ram" air in.
I dont have an intercooler that I am trying to force air over.
While I have not technical data to support my assumption, I think having the scoop backward will create better air flow while driving and let hot air out while standing still.

Very low tech but when I first put mine on (rear facing) I stuck some thin strips of fabric above the intake. At low speed they were being blown out but above about 15mph they were being sucked in.
