Well I've been working on a bunch of cooling things this spring. I finally got to put them to the test at CM09.

This spring I...
I still need to install my 160 degree thermostat and the "cooler" spark plugs. Oh yeah, and of course install a water methanol injection setup.:hillbilly:

At any rate, crawling and idling around Moab, my temperatures stayed much cooler, and more importantly, my AC blew cold the whole time. Well not exactly the whole time. Thursday morning I was running hotter, and the AC started cutting out. I put it off until lunch when I tested the relay. It worked fine. So I decided I would jump the fan leads to make sure it was working. Well, I found one of the fan leads hanging loose (), so with the help of treeroot's dad, I got it back together, and had nice cold temps for the kids to enjoy the rest of the trip.

I actually think that the truck runs cooler with the AC on now as that fan DOES affect not just the AC, but moves enough air to affect the radiator at low to no speed. I installed the 14" pusher fan that brotherrob put on his. I got it for ~$40 with the relay and mounting kit to the door. I couldn't justify the >$200 for the JDM fan that is 4" smaller and moves a helluva lot less air than this fan (rated at ~2,000crfm).

Thanks to all of those who put in the research hours!

P.S. I have the fan setup for the afterrun. It did run for several minutes at a time when I shut it down on the trail, but I thought it was well worth it, and wasn't concerned withi it draining the battery.

What kind of ambient temperatures were you dealing with?

and now that everyone is trickling home from CM09, where are all the fun pics ;):flipoff2:

80s, but I'd imagine hotter on the Slickrock. It isn't the ambient so much as the heat soaked engine compartment.

info about the pusher that you run in front .. .?

Here's the link to an ebay auction from the same seller. Add the relay for no additional shipping (probably not for you though;)). The mounting was easy. Only a slight trim with my Dremel, and I had to pull my horns while I mounted, then reinstalled them in the factory location.

you miss the link or I do . ?

I think the link is missing because I can't see it either.

I'm planning on adding a pusher fan and some vents this summer, it's good to hear that these mods worked for you.

Could you post up some pics and details of the install. How did you wire it? I'm about to do this real soon as the Texas heat is almost here.

Pics and details of the install of the aux fan (assuming so since you mention wiring)?

  1. Purchase the fan off ebay from the above link.
  2. Install with the included mounting kit. You will need to remove the horns during installation and slightly trim a bracket on the PS that is mounted to the brace (you'll know once you get there). It fits, just barely.
  3. Wire according to post #1 here: https://forum.ih8mud.com/80-series-tech/103530-abcs-80s-cooling-part-iii-press-switch.html
  4. Enjoy the cold AC.
Sorry no pics, it was too quick and easy.:meh:

Good work, and I like the hood vents mod too (3M painters tape rules the planet). I've had these cooling mods coming up on 3 years now, and have had no issues with water, the pusher fan, or the fan relay mod. The amount of heat that escapes from those vents with these mods, is visible in the winter and summer months.

Thanks for the write-up, glad it worked for you too!

Cheers

Thanks Scott. It's funny, with the 14" fan the Cruiser runs a lot cooler with the AC on rather than off now. The two big vents I installed dump heat. It's been raining everyday here, and when the Cruiser is up to temp, the vents are always dry (a testament to the temperatures that were previously trapped under my hood).

The fact is the mods that I think paid the biggest dividend are the pusher fan with your wiring setup and the hood vents. Together these mods cost me <$100 and made an unbelievable difference in the comfort level as well as all around performace of my Cruiser.

I read that and I guess I will have to go back and read parts I and II to make sense of the wiring as I had no idea what pins he was referring to. That post assumes that you already have a relay in and a power feed to it and what not. I was wondering what relay you ran and all of that stuff. Did you order the relay kit from the same seller as the fan on ebay? Any and all details please?

Here's the fan: PROCOMP 14" INCH ELECTRIC THERMO COOLING RADIATOR FAN:eBay Motors (item 260399381620 end time May-21-09 21:29:53 PDT)

Here's the relay: DERALE ELECTRIC FAN RELAY UNIT W/ FUSE & WIRE HARNESS:eBay Motors (item 230346578892 end time Jul-01-09 07:55:27 PDT)

They are from the same seller. In the auction for the fan, it says that if you buy a relay from them as well it ships for free.

The relay wiring is super easy. I wired both the constant and switched lines (can't remember the pin #s, but is says in the instructions) to the battery to allow for the after run. The 12v output to the fan (you have to check the polarity on the fan as it is either a pusher or puller to make sure you have it wired correctly. Ground the ground line on the fan. Wire the ground line on the relay to one side of the medium pressure switch (it does not matter which side), and the other side to ground.

It may sound difficult or confusing, but trust me when you have the parts in hand, it's easy.

Good luck!

You still had to buy the terminals referened in post #1 of the cooling thread, correct?

Does the pusher fan just help with cooling the a/c condenser? Or does it help with cooling the coolant temperature as well?

Yes, those Toy PN are a cross reference to a commonly available terminal that fits into the 80 pressure switch without any modification. My dealer had several of those terminals with pigtails and water plugs in stock, the 'actual' FJ application was an 'ordered' part. Using that part number makes this portion of the mod, literally a 1 minute plug and play. 1 side goes to ground, the other side to the ground activation on the relay.

Does the pusher fan just help with cooling the a/c condenser? Or does it help with cooling the coolant temperature as well?

Both actually... I installed it to help cool the A/C condenser, but it also helps the efficiency of the engine fan by reducing negative pressure created by engine fan draw at the front of the radiator.

Almost 3 years with this mod, zero issues with electrical, and zero issues with the 'after-run' setup draining the battery.

Doc, What Scott said. I sued 'em and it made that portion of the process super easy.

Also as Scott mentioned. My overall coolant temps are much cooler (sorry no data reference, but it is visible on the RT temp mod) with the AC on. Furthermore, when I stop or am wheeling the fan in conjunction with the vents relieves a boatload of the heat-soaked air that would otherwise be trapped beneath the hood. When I used to open my hood when stopped, I would get blasted with the heat from the engine compartment, not so much now.

I have the same setup : 14" pusher fan; hood vent; 10K oil mod; temp gauge mod, 93' brass rad.... been running all except 10K oil mod and brass rad for last 2 years...
