Im thinking about buying an 02 model, any thoughts experience with them?
Epinion gives them a fairly high rating amongst its peers

how tall are you?

I had a 98 (basically the same, I think) and while it was a truly bulletproof bike, it was silly tall.

I am 6' and was on tiptoes at every light.

There are a few kits to drop it an inch or two, and a corbin saddle will get the height down a bit.

Aside from that, the bike was incredible. Not a single thing wrong or annoying in the couple of years I had it.

LOL I bought it 7 mins ago and Im 6.2 and nearly needed a hip transplant throwing my leg over it.

Its only done 11000klms neary all on road. The PO bought it used off the dealer and it had a problem with the valve guide seals after few days.
The dealer fixed it and put new rings in as well.
Its been back for an inspection recently and all is well
PO is into quads and had no use for it except as DD for work.

I looked at some online opinions and it scored over 90% for reliabilty;)
I cant wait For the weekend and summer is coming:D

What a great bike and the torque is amazing,I really have to remember to hang on when I twist the throttle.
My son is so fxxxing jealous:flipoff2:

One small problem I have is that it randomly stalls. Usually when Im coming to a stop and Im down changing with the lever in,it will stall.
Ive tried turning the idle up ,sort of helps, but its not right.
Its also seems like it wants to backfire on a cold start with the choke on,but no smoke
Also seems to leak fuel randomly. I put it on a trailer to take it out for a ride and I noticed a wet patch of gas underneath.Float?
Any ideas before I it to bike shop to fix?

Here ya go, a forum to help you out

XR600/650 - ThumperTalk

Been there already:grinpimp:

I got my problem sorted out,it had a sticky valve and the others needed adjustment, Its just about perfect now.
Seems to have to be really warm before it will idle under all conditions.

Do you have an XR?

Nope, don't have one. Have had many bikes mostly dual purpose back in the 70s and late 80s.
Been following XR650ls for years. I like the simplicity of the engine, lack of radiator, computers, fuel ejection and high dollar widgets. sorta like my fj60...I can work on most of the stuff that it needs for maintenance and some of the stuff that needs fixed. And like the old 60 series you get a lot of bang for your buck..unless you want to go really light and fast, but light and fast cost more, I'm old and slow so don't mind my machines being of the same nature...

XR650l is in my future though, I live in the middle of some great country for one...wife says sell the fj60 then buy the XR..I of course want, and will have (eventually) both.

They are great bikes, like the landcruiser of motorcycles. One thing Ive learned on Thumpertalk is that their is a lot of untapped potential in these engines. From a standard 34 hp it is possible to get 100 hp like the European supermotard champion,of course longevity and relibility go out the window with those kind of mods.

When I become a bit more familiar with it ,I will do what they call Daves Mods,a list of small changes to carburettion and air/exhaust flow for some extra thump

Having a landcruiser and an XR650L is cool. I plan on taking mine on a trip to the southern coast of oz in either dec or jan(our summer).
There is some hard packed beaches where you can ride legally for hundreds of klms in one direction;)
