If you were going to design your dream home what cool ideas and design elements would you put into it? I'm not talking about gold plated floors and crazy stuff like that.

Stuff like........
-Kitchen close to the garage so you don't have to shlep groceries forever.
- Biiiig pantry off garage and connects to kitchen.
- Small fridge in master closet.
- Large, finished storage area above garage.

Time savers for housework:

1. Put the washer/dryer on same floor/near bedrooms. Why lug laundry to the other side of the house?

2. Bathrooms that have tile floors should have a drain in them; better yet, have a walk-in shower with a slightly sunken floor so that you can mop the bathroom floor and push the water down the drain.

3. Screw that seat up/seat down bull****--next house, the bathroom that I use the most is getting a urinal.

well i love designing homes and plan on starting a business doing just that when i graduate and get a little engineering experience under my belt so...

3 car garage.
Large Kitchen connected to Garage(for your above mentioned reason)
Pantry/laundry room connected to kitchen(like you said)
Personal office with vaulted ceilings giving it the feel of a great room.
Large Living room
Exceptionally large master bedroom(per wife's orders)
Large master bathroom with Hot Tub.
many decks and porches to BBQ and enjoy nature on.
Pool and hot tub outside.
Basement(partially finished at least)

the list can go on and on.

Somewhere between 3500 and 5000 sq ft.

I have a two story house. I really love having the master bedroom downstairs. When we moved in our kids were little (youngest 1.5 yrs) and I wasn't sure about schlepping up and down the stairs in the middle of the night. Now, I love it. Never have to go upstairs if I don't want to, but have 4 bdrms/1 bath up there. Kids can do all the schlepping... Vaulated ceilings and 3 car garage rock too.

Can you tell I'm making a list based on practical experience? :D

Another thought--two dishwashers. Take clean dishes out of "clean" dishwasher, use them, place them in "dirty" dishwasher. When that's full, run it, and reverse the process. You never have to empty the dishwasher and put the stuff away. :grinpimp:

Some things I wish my house had (built in 1987).

  • Tons and tons of outlets and extra circuits, especially outside. That era of tract home didn't provide nearly enough electrical and cable outlets, and it's a pain to add after.
  • Sink in laundry room (which is right off the garage), if not a sink in the garage.
  • More windows, less wall. Why not enjoy the view?
  • Larger master bath to accomodate snail-shell shower, large hot tub.
  • Outlets in the floor in family room/living room where there is no overhead lighting. (big $ to add afterwards)
  • Longer garage. Can barely fit in a minivan. Cruiser with ARB and rear bumper/tire goes front-to-back with about 6" on either end.
  • AC in garage/better insulated garage. This may be regional, but in summer my garage goes to over 110 until late at night, and the doors are too hot to touch (need to insulate).
  • Two water heaters. (may depend on how many people/how much usage you get)

Scrap that. Get one of the instant hot tankless systems.
