Well, it didn't take seven hours, but it was a bit of work for this newb. Anyway, thanks in large part to material provided by Tom Thornton, I was finally able to build my garage hoist. The frame is made from 14ga studs that Tom hooked me up with. The box holding the hoist is just 2x10s over the rafters w/the iron pipe supporting the actual hoist. Home Depot garage storage hooks are the four hooks supporting it. Also, to take the weight off the hoist, I have it anchored w/caribiners to eye screws. All seems very stable. Now I can get to work on the brake upgrade. Here are the pix:

Oh yeah...forgot about the hoist itself. It's a Harbor Freight hoist rated at 220lbs or 440lbs if you set it up with the double line pull like I did. Basically the main hook just attaches to the hoist body and they included a second hook that acts as a pully...very handy.
