Working on a converted 61. Having trouble with the brakes. Have already talked about canister and vacuum issue under diesel tech side.

The truck we are working on still has the FJ60 brake booster, but the HJ61 vacuum system. We have the HJ61 brake booster. It is not the same as the FJ60 brake booster (looks like same bolt pattern). The FJ60 Booster says Bendix on the top. There are 2 FJ60s side by side in the yard and both boosters say Bendix on them. The HJ61 booster says Toyoto on it and is 1/2 as thick.

The question is, how different are the two boosters mechanically? Could that be part of our brake issue? Are they made to work off different vacuums?

Also, we have the cluth booster too. The truck shifts fine, clutch feels good with the FJ60 clutch. What difference would the HJ61 boosted clutch make?

there's a buildup thread somewhere on mud involving a clutch booster installation and the verdict was that it was not worth the trouble.

Brake boosters are commonly replaced with aftermarket which could explain visual differences. I'd just use whichever is in the best shape.

My HJ60 had the boosted clutch and I really liked it. It made the pedal nice and light which was great off-road and in traffic. I've got a FJ setup now, and I while it may have more feel and better feedback, I miss the smoothness of the booster. I actually still have it and am considering converting back.

All the boosters we have came on the Toyotas when they were new. I am wondering what the differance is between the HJ61 boost and the FJ60 boost since they are both 1987 and both made in Japan, but different boost? Why would they use different boost unless the vacuum systems are different?

I am searching the FSM for the answer, but hoped someone on MUD would know.

I have had a 60 and a 61 both 87s and cannot tell you the difference unless one of the systems is designed to run on more or less vacuum. I would look at the FSM and see what the Alt/VAC pump on the 12Ht is making VS what a 2f should make in vacuum. If all else fails, use the 12HT booster.

Thanks, that is the plan. Looks easy to switch out the boosters.

i had the same problem. i bypassed my canister and went straight off the vac pump to the brake booster. the vac canister i have will not hold vacumm. summit racing sells some nice ones for about $39

Thanks!

What brake booster are you using, HJ61 or FJ60?

The booster are the same... there are different designs/licences over the years, but they are effectively the same unit.
