So my dad's 2002 STS burns about 1 litre for about every 1500-2000k. Haven't done a true accurate test, but I know it's in that ball park.
He has taken it to the dealer since new and it is still under warranty. Since my vehicle died, I have been using his the odd time for work. I noticed one day that the "low oil" message came on when coming home, then the check engine light, then when I was home it wouldn't let me take the key out. Checked the oil and the stick was dry. Added oil and was able to remove the key. A week later he had it into the dealer for a scheduled tune up. A few weeks after that, the "low oil" message came on again. Went to check things and found that again, the stick was dry. Also noticed it was very black (changed oil). Also noticed the air filter was extremely dirty. Also noticed that the air box didn't have a clamp holding it onto the air intake (unfiltered air was getting in) which thru a code that Onstar decoded for me. Changed oil, filters and clamped the air box onto the intake.
Do you think because it was run low on oil that the rings are now worn? To bring it up to normal range, I had to add 2 liters of oil, total is around 7, so bottom of stick is around 5.
What the fxxx is the dealership doing? Three weeks after a tune up and things should not look that bad, and how could they not clamp on the box?
But more importantly how did this all start?
Fair enough my Dad doesn't check things like he should and this might have been avoided had he. BUT, by sticking to the dealership maintance schedule and assuming they are doing what they are supposed to, a situation like this shouldn't have happened.
Car has just over 115,000k, warrant runs out at 120. Dealership should give him a new engine no?
But my worries are that since I changed the oil/filter and air filter to Fram, that could have voided the warranty. So should I go to another dealership and get a new oil/air filter from them so his dealership wont know I fixed their screw up? Obviously with a situation like this, the dealership will try anything to not pay for a new engine.
Thoughts?
