Today was short, but I got the rear hitch off without busting a single bolt!
Going to sand the bumper and install a reeses hitch...and sooner or later, I'll do the rear signals.

Marks offroad has a real nice bolt on hitch receiver. I recommend taking the wheels and bumperettes to a sand blaster. Saves time for more important owner repairs. Looking good.

Glad to see you back at it!

Cheers!

Thanks! This 40 is a strrrange relationship, but these last two days of work have 'rekindled' my desires..Its been so relaxing to do this work; I find that the work I usually carry home with me evaporates when I pull out my tools and start to work.

Ahhh, Progress. Looking good!

Thanks Phares - I guess we're figuring this out together! Glad to see you in the club!

Funny - after spending my 2nd day wire-wheeling on the wheel, Id come to the VERY SAME CONCLUSION. Theres a local family business that does great sandblasting/powdercoating..Theyre charging $40 a wheel for just the sandblasting..seems a pretty decent price!

I do want a hitch -but the huz has it in my head that I should have the capability to mount my winch on front or back interchangeably-I kinda like that idea!

On a side note, Ive decided on a color - 8b2 - somewhat common on the late 80s 62s..Going to have napa mix me up 8-10 rattlecans for the exterior (and eventually, the interior) Its a brighter blue and still 'landcruiser-y' :D

You beat me to the wheels but I scored some fenders from Jon. I'm curious to see what other people say about $40/wheel for the blasting.

We missed you at the barn this weekend - the weather was great for it, but it looks like you got to spend some good 'Cruiser time anyway. I dinged up an exhaust pipe and bent the front bumper when a tree jumped out at me. Gives me a reason to finally trim the ends off of it. Let us know what you think of the NAPA paint, please.

will do Jon - it was a couple of hell weeks at the real job - my first two days off..and weather in the mid 60s...I had to stay here and work...Ill keep ya posted..PS Ive got all six of the wheels...Ill have an extra one available!

I had all five of my wheels blasted at the local powdercoaters for $100 total.I could have had them blasted and powdercoated for $40 a wheel but primered and rattlecanned them and they have held up great. the hitch receiver that Mark sells will take any 2" square hitch.

Well, I pulled the trigger on tires - I chose as close as I could get to 'tall and skinnies' 5 - 32x9.5x15's from Sam's Offroad
My huz found these Super Swampers for me..and Rick over there at Sam's gave us a pretty decent deal, shipped!

I hear SS do not do well longterm on the highway, but it's an occasional driver, and I love how these tires look on 40s! Im going to ditch the 33x12.5x15s, as well as the wheels once the 'new' wheels and tires go on.

Im dropping my wheels off to be sandblasted Friday morning, finishing up the rear signals, bumperettes and if all goes well - pick wheels back up Saturday..guess I should find a good flat gray for my new 'shoes'!

40$ per wheel to only sandblast is too much, shop around a little bit more. But if your rich, just pay it...

$$$40 per wheel just to sandblast sounds like highway robbery to me. Here is the paint you need

can't wait to see mejane with new shoesa

Thanks for the heads up on paint - Ill check it out!

Ive called three shops - these guys are the only ones who'll do it..Maybe its a location thing (the sticks) - Im definitely not pulling an endless supply of money off of a tree in the backyard, nor am I turning tricks on the street corner to supply my 40 habit..:hhmm:

Ill give it another go, you could be right!

I called several shops this morning, all of them referred me back to the place Id already chosen...guess thats the way it is in a 'smaller' town!

This is how it looks. Looking forward to see the finished build.

Looking good yourself! How long have you had the tires on?

I had plans today to finish cleaning up the bumper before we finish up the electric - no such luck. Typical eastern NC winter weather means RAIN! I dropped the wheels off this morning and plan on hitting the tractor store for just the right gray for them.

Sidenote - I thought Id formerly introduce me and the huz, I always like to put a face with communication and the 'interweb' .. so here we are - last year in Maine...right before a huge lobstah feast (my brother in law is a commercial lobstah man) Followed by a pic of me and some friends on our way to a Clutch concert...YES. That sign exists, right next a Piggly Wiggly a couple of towns down the road!

Sidenote - Ive decided on using Duplicolor from Napa - you can order rattlecans, filled to order in whatever color you chose..and its going to be blue..I like the blue on the mid/late 80s fj60s and someone posted a pic of a Nordic Blue - which is also a favorite.

Just found this thread and I can say that you are one cool chick! Not many women would "take on a 40"! My first 40 was a 74 and I loved the truck. You are doing good. Keep pressing and you'll be proud of the completed product!

Later,

Hi Jeff- thanks..sometimes I wonder about my sanity in this hobby LoL

After I took 'this girl' out on my first 4wheel excursion, I felt a swell of pride - Id just put on a 2.5" lift, new shocks and it was an AMAZING sense of pride to see the results of good work..I gotta say hats off to the huz, he is the one who fields all my questions and knows how to fix most everything.

But the wrenching? That's my job!

Well today was the first time meJane had been started in over a month, the battery was unhooked while the wiring lay bare. APPARENTLY she DID NOT approve of laying dormant! I couldnt get her to stay running. Turns out the the electric fuel pump had pooped the bed. We ran down to Advance Auto, where the register jockey immediately needed my vehicle info (couldnt just say yeah or nay to having fuel pumps) and then told me they didnt have any that would fit a 74 FJ40.
THATS my pet peeve now - that silly computer always tells them they have no parts that I can use. No problem, I went next door to AutoZone and specifically looked for the oldest man behind the counter...he didnt look anything up on a computer, he took me to the fuel pumps. YAYY! I took what they had, and a new fuel filter until I get order a mechanical one. (The PO had the electric one put in) So it sounds like I have a very large angry bumblebee under the hood, until I finish turning the key.
The fuel pump in, we started her up to test my brake drums..and we made it exactly 1/2 inch..Id adjusted them too tight. GAH!
Attempt number 2, and we are on the road - feels like the front right needs to be tightened a bit and they will stop on a dime..daylight was fading fast so after work tomorrow - one more adjustment and it should be good to go.

A slight word of caution.....

Driving the 40 is the rewarding part and I have seen new owners bring their trucks home and completely dismantle them, only to lose interest because it became overwhelming. They did not spend enough time experiencing the 40 before dismantling it.

I have to agree with Copenhagen1.. I have 2 Land Cruisers and I really wish I would enjoy them before stripping apart.. I have stripped both of mine down in weeks of getting them and it takes me 3-6 months before I am able to drive them and it is super frustrating..

The next one I am going to drive around before painting.
