...and the modding has begun.

Its a disease...I cant help myself..wait'll you see what I have planned for mounting my AR ! Having a friend that runs a tactical gear shop makes it oh, SO much worse!! Im trying to get him to sponsor me...hell Ill deck the whole 40 out for sponsorship :grinpimp:

Request more now! I've got to have something to keep me awake at work at 0200. I'm currently living vicariously through the forum members until I get my own 40. Hopefully in the next couple of weeks...So post an after action report when you can. Thanks and the 40 looks great!

Ask you shall receive - theres never enough 40 porn in the world!! These pics were taken at our Cruising the Carolinas/Logans Run by Jason..

And I started a thread in the clubhouse to share pics with everyone else. Ive always thought of myself as painfully shy..so 'putting myself out there' this last weekend was not an easy task - but it seems that if ya got a landcruiser, you got something to start a conversation!!:D

Here's my *working* list of things I want to do (subject to change)
Replace front seats (possibly using one of the repairing one of the worn out ones as the 3rd seat-already removed jumpseats-planning on selling them)
Power Steering
Family Rollcage
Making a 'summer' hardtop - if I find an old hardtop cheap..basicly removing all windows and hatch doors and fitting the white cap on supports...Ive seen this on mud somewhere..but I wont start this until I find a top for parts (dirt cheap, i hope)
Replacing the giant air intake with something more efficient and smaller
Rewiring EVERYTHING (Im pretty confident that this will actually be what Im really good at, we shall see)
Replacing rear signal light housed in rear bumper (completely rusted out)
Installing 9000lb ramsey winch on front bumper (possibly replacing bumper)

and a nice rattlecan job...Im thinking smurf blue or pumpkin orange or that minty green . This will be the very last thing I do. (LAST THING? WHO AM I KIDDING!)

BTW, if you saw my earlier post about the soundcube - it works great - ran it all weekend on my inverter, which was flawless! The inverter set up (hooked up to an Optima red top)was used to recharge a camera , battery, powered the soundcube for more than 8+ hours, ran an air compressor for a few minutes no issues across the board.

Any updates on MeJane?

Its been a bit, hasnt it? It all boils down to "I told you so" and how much I suck at saying "I was wrong" - When I first started on this obsession, no one on Mud could tell me I was wrong. . No mechanical knowledge whatsoever - strike one. No garage - strike 2 ... Patience - strike 3! All three of these things work against me..Id say I considered completely giving up on my 40 over a silly little issue..I had to back off, clear my head and regroup.

So here's my revisioned 40 Sanity Plan.

Fix whats necessary - this is where I was getting bogged down - looking at too many threads, adding too many plans and ideas. Comparing my progress to others faaaaar more advanced than I.

Power steering and power brakes are both PERMANENTLY off the table - and here's why.

I have a daily driver. My huz has a daily driver. We just got a Tundra to haul the 40 around. IMO this big hulk of a 40, is essentially, how it should be - all the reasons I fell in love with this Landcruiser are negated by changing it.

So driving the 40 is NOT a passive driving experience.... Its not my daily driver - its a 38 year 4WD. I bought it because of what it is .. not what it could be if I devoted all my spare time and money to converting it to somewhat resemble the feeling of my DDs (disc brakes, power steering etc)

Herein lies my manifesto - all parts needing replacement - will be correctly replaced by me..no unnecessary mods..Keep it simple stupid. Stay on track, preserve this baby as much as I can. AND DRIVE THE HELL OUT OF IT!

Now that Ive got that out my system..Today is back to work day - Im replacing both rear signal lights..Stay tuned for pics!

wow, sanity=serenity

:clap::clap::clap::clap::clap:
Sounds like a plan. I did the same thing when I had my tub empty and down to bare metal with the holes welded up. It was summer and I decided to put it back together which basically meant putting the seats in and drive the SOB. Now I fix what needs fixin and drive it like it's supposed to be driven. It's my DD because I wouldn't want to drive anything else. The F350 sits at home except when necessary.
Go for it. Good decision.

Thanks..Its an amazingly humbling experience..and crazy how much validation I NEED here on this forum. I take the advice, factor in my level of noob-ness and run with it. Im pretty sure my huz almost wishes I would give up..Ive already broken two bolts off this morning and have to figure out how to get them out ..:bang:

Its an epic journey full of silly mistakes and moments of doubt. Yesterday I opened up my desktop computer, switched out my network card, added a second hard drive, did a partition and reformatted..my huz (the know it all mechanic in the house) comes home and has no clue what this means..and it occurred to me that dogged determination and years of effin around with computers gave me what I now considered 'elementary' knowledge..and its the same with the 40..Im just on the other side of learning curve with the mechanics of this vehicle... Hope ya'll got patience! :bounce:

Never say "never". It's been a bit since you wheeled it. I suspect power steering will be back on the table during your next outing. PS is not a perversion, it is common sense for the type of 4xing in the states. If it were just a dd or weekend backroad back road and fire road vehicle, i'd say PS isn't a neccesity, but for anything you are using 4lo consistently, I'd say it is a must have.

you don't have a brake booster  '74s came with them originally

power steering is not as necessary as people make you believe - ask me how I know :hillbilly: :steer: [if 9x Golden Spike in Moab doesn't prove the point, I don't know what would :meh:]

that said, there might be a point when I will switch, I have the parts collected . . .

 Same way I feel about my 69!:steer: It is fun to romp around in a 40 year old rig that is noisy, slow, and rough riding! Thats how they are supposed to be!

Bravo Charity! Great attitude and enthusiasm in restoring your forty! I look forward to more progress and pics.

I don't know Stump...I definitely think power steering is NICE -don't get me wrong..I also don't think its a perversion. I wont turn into some 40 stock snob over this..Its actually more of what you said - 'backroad and fire road' type vehicle - occasionally on the beach and maybe some of the easy trails.

Its the vehicle I want to drive when its time to put the boat in, or go to the beach..and sometimes just to show the masses of heeps in this town what "COOL" really does look like :grinpimp: Don't worry - you will totally be entitled to saying "I TOLD YOU SO" should I change my mind again!!!

power brake v disc brake - my mistake..I happen to like drum brakes..when adjusted they are fantastic!

Completely agreed! It fits my nature - which I mentioned when I started out on this journey - "Theyre bulky in all the right places, theyre tough and yet beautiful they take a licking and keep on going. Theyre stubborn and faithful. Theyre cranky on cold mornings.. In other words...they remind me..of me! "

Thanks for good words!

Pics..oh yea. I should've taken a pic of my huz's face when he discovered where I broke the bolts off on Friday LoL

bird. bird. bird is the word.

Are we getting you in a 40 Phares? Any bites?

Well I got the front drums on - the front ps side was very worn, and the ds side had severe grooves worn into the drum.

I'll do the rear drums tomorrow...and then its time to focus on the rear wiring issues.

And I couldn't figure out why my tail lights weren't working LoL

I FINALLY got all 4 drums on just today. I picked up 6 welded rims from a club member and a set of bumperettes.(Mine were apparently homemade and quite mis-shaped)

All of the wheels need to be stripped down and repainted..so today I stripped 'em down and started sanding. The bumperettes has a gawdawful silver spray paint on them, the wheels are in good shape, Im experimenting on 1 wheel and the bumperettes..here's my preliminary work-

This was one of those 'love' days with my 40..the most peaceful working day Ive had thus far..reminds me how much I enjoy manual labor. Sure - the neighbors dog was barking..but I threw on some Johnny Cash and cranked it way up..the rest of this day too short I was in 40 LaLa Land..Now if only I had a Red Stripe.
