Hi Folks,

I'm planning a 3 week Vacation with my Wife & 2 Kids to the States in July next year and would like to fit in a an 2-3 day guided off-road trip in somewhere. We are doing Disney (though haven't decided on which Disney yet) and probably New York. So we are hoping that probably the the best Land Cruiser Forum in the world can help us out with info and recommendations on trails and where we can hire/borrow a rig. We not looking to do anything extreme, just a family/kid friendly trip with memorable scenery.

Any suggestions appreciated

cheers

Marko

Marko,

Are you looking for something within a certain range of one of the Disney parks or New York? If so, that would narrow it down to a few states, and then you could post a query for localized information in the state-specific forums here on 'mud.
This summer we timed the start of our vacation to coincide with a Colorado TLCA chapter's organized trail trip and had a great time on a guided run with them. We noticed numerous places to rent Jeeps in the areas that had good off-road trails. I think that with a good guide book for the local trails in the area you visit, you could easily find your way around the trails, should you desire to do so.

Thanks for the pointer to state specific forums.
A trail within few hours range of New York or the Californian Disney park would be ideal though will consider anything. Are there Jeep rentals specifically for off-road trails and with relevent insurance cover?

Disney(Cal)-Colorado-New York - Home, makes sense

I've never driven off-road in those areas before so I'm not sure about off-road rental availability; you may be able to find some by googling "__location__ Jeep Rental".

Renting a rugged 4WD is possible in SoCal, at LAX you can get a Jeep Wrangler or an FJC for roughly $70/day. I don't know about off-roading it, though.

If you're looking for offroad scenery, SoCal is the place to go (Anza-Borrego, Mojave, Red Rock canyon SP, Joshua Tree NP or even Death Valley) BUT I don't think that in July you can deem it "family friendly" because of the brutal heat in the desert. So if you have time and/or resources, I would direct you to Southern Utah (Moab!) or Colorado. Altitude brings bearable daytime temperatures.
