Could use some advice if anyone is around this weekend. 93 FZJ80, Yesterday got by on the drivers side not disconnecting tie rod from the knuckle housing for my front end service, only one connected on that side.

Decided I would remove the 2 tie rods for PS since it seemed like it might be easier to get the knuckle out of the way. Got the appropriate forked tool, and proceeded to rip the front tie rod bushing between the arm and the tie rod end. >:( >:( :bust: Not a broken birf but still a pain.

Now what? I've never messed with tie rod ends before. Can I drive on it a few days till I get the appropriate parts?
Can I just replace the bushing or the whole end (I obviously need to look at my FSM too )

Cdan? can I get the parts #'s if you see this post?

Secondly, when cleaning out the PS birfield, as I got it too the point where most of the old grease was out, and the birf was bordering on "dry", I used brake cleaner and a airhose to get it pretty damn clean, the joint itself became consistenly hung up, and would not pivot very well. Is this a sign of a bad birf??? :bust2: :-\ I did not notice it do this at all with the DS when I cleaned it up...
I did not take the birfs apart because I forgot to add the c-clips to my rebuild order and toyota here only had one, so I don't know what they look like inside.....

Thanks

I'll bet your birf is fine. If it wasn't clicking before, regrease, and be happy.

Those pickle forks tear the rubber grease seal 100% of the time in my inexpert experience. Use a tie rod end puller next time which is non distructive. I'll bet the boots are available, but consider replacing all the TRE's if you can afford to, since now is the time.

I have several hundred new rubber boots in stock. I'd be happy to send you (or anyone else) some. We remove these boots as part of our crossover steering kits for Pickup's and 4Runners. We just toss them in a drawer. Each boot comes with a new spring retainer to hold the boot on. It's the exact same boot as the FJ80 tie rod end, in fact I have a set of these on my 1993.

Call me at the shop with your name and address and I will send you a few.
