Help finding parts for 1980 model

Hi everyone,

I'm new here, also a new owner of a 1980 FJ40. It has the original 2F. I will have lots of questions coming, I'm sure. But for right now I need help finding:

Upper radiator hose (probably should just purchase and replace the whole set while I'm doing it)
The lid/cover for the power steering reservoir (it's leaking near the top)
Connector hoses for the interior rear heater

Any help and direction would be appreciated, thank you!
 
Try your local dealer for the radiator hoses, and/or check SOR.com and any of the dozens of vendors. Don't buy hoses, etc. on eBay. Search the forum and see what others have done.
 
I had good luck at the Local NAPA for hoses.

Pics are always helpful..
 
The vendor list is full of good folks, some better than others. +1 for read lots threads - there are many talented people that have done every thing including making parts from scratch. Lot a good youtube vids for how to also.

When asking for help, provide as much information as you can minimum year/month - model - market; as parts fit can change at any time.

Change out all the radiator at the same - they all age/rot out at the same time. Keep the old set as back up if they are have not failed.

Coolerman's wiring diagram and parts
 
It is a US FJ40. I know it's a 1980, but I don't know the month of production. How/where would I find that?

It has an aftermarket aluminum radiator and looks like maybe they didn't use the proper hoses. I took it for a spin around the neighborhood earlier, went back out when I realized I left the key in the ignition and coolant was leaking. The upper hose was spraying out where it's clamped. I think it's either the wrong size hose, and/or the clamp wasn't put on properly. I'd like to just get the proper hoses and fit them now.

I haven't tried anywhere yet, but I think I'll stop by NAPA tomorrow and see if they can get what I need. I didn't know if they'd have them, I figured I'd need to order from a special vendor.

If you have an aftermarket radiator then I'm not sure the OEM hoses will work....but maybe. Quantities are generally correct in the spreadsheet but ignore the prices; they are meaningless.

You should have a VIN plate on the drivers side A pillar with the build date and VIN #. That same number should be on the title and stamped on the outside of the passenger side frame horn behind the front bumper.
 
The data plate in the drivers door well should have the year/month of production. A lot can happen to a rig since 1980 with PO's.

Non stock radiator, then you need to measure the fitting(s). A slightly smaller hose can be made to work much easier than a slightly large one.

The SOR.com catalogue, tho hard to use sometimes, has been very helpful for applications dates.

The hose diameter looks too big from the pictures. As stated earlier, it's almost impossible to get a hose which is too big to fit without leaking: you're better off forcing on one which is too small.

Obviously the thermostat housing is the correct size, but measure the radiator to make sure it is correct. Then, if it is, you'll be amased how well a factory house will fit. I would replace all at once. I would also consider a factory copper radiator, which are still available from vendors like @cruisermatt.
 
I have the OE hose in stock, as well as a pair of the original hard pipes that go to the rear heater that I pulled out of a ‘79 that I parted out. They’re LONG, so keep that in mind for shipping cost.

As far as the p/s cap, I’d pinch one off another Toyota in your local pick and pull. Most of the caps are similar.

Thank you. Why switch back to a copper radiator? Is there a problem with the aluminum ones?

Thank you. I don’t need the entire metal hose that runs from engine bay to rear heater, only the short rubber that connects the metal hose to the heater itself.
