I have owned a number of 'cruisers through the years, including an '87 FJ60 I drove for 8 years, and sold to a buddy, who was then nearly killed when a cell-phone yakking moron went across I-25 and hit him head-on at 65 (in a Chevy Monte Cruddo). See pix. In the meantime, I owned a '95 FZJ-80 for 10 years and sold it at 200K.
Anyway, I never really liked FJ62s, since I felt that they were gaudy and gutless, but a neighbor of mine had an '89 I had known of for years. They put a ton of repair $$ into it over the years (head gasket, alternator, water pump, radiator, etc.) but had stopped driving it. Oddly, the power windows/locks/mirrors/4WD all work perfectly - most of the troublesome FJ62 stuff works great.
Original owner, 243K miles, some rust, and their puppy got loose inside for 15 min. and trashed the seats. It has a ton of new parts, runs very well, shifts great, etc. No blowby on the engine and it's as strong as any 3F-E. Tranny is dry and shifts great, except for a rare harsh-reverse engagement. I got it for a very fair price (scrap plus, basically) and plan to rehab soon. I desperately need a front bumper and obviously some interior parts and a RF fender.
I didn't *need* this truck, but it puts a smile on my face when I drive it and should be a good father-daughter fixup project. I'm sure I'll be bugging this forum as time goes on.

it's got 333K. I stuck an almost perfect rear bumper on the front, swapped in a 4 speed, rebuilt the tcase, front axle, rear axle, new bushings and the odd bit of trim here and there- a windshield and door- THANK YOU GEORG!!, but heck, it's almost a brand new truck agin now but for the suspension and engine
they respond well to attention as I'm sure you're well aware
