Hey Guys.
The :princess: and hounds and I are heading up to Searsport Maine for a week of camping- er... RVing. My parents have a 35 footer and I always wanted to borrow it- so I AM. I plan to tow the 40 up so I am asking what is good to go do around Searsport- besides the obvious (Acadia, Bar Harbor, etc). We are expecting our first in February so anything super hairy is out (as far as wheeling goes). Let me know if any of you guys have been up there or are up there. We will be making the drive up Sat. 7/12 and be there through 7/19...

Thanks!

I have friends that live right in Bar Harbor and I think it's a beautiful town to walk around in, visit the shops, have a seafood dinner down on the water, lots of walking trails along the sea as well.

As for wheeling I have no idea. Where are you parking the camper?

Katahdin is open now if you're feeling up to a day hike.

There are tons of class VI roads up there, but finding them often requires some local knowledge.

Cool. I'm psyched

Dude... it's an RV!!! ;) My parents have been correcting me since they got it- I tell them it's payback for calling mine a j**p.... We are staying at a campground in Searsport- not sure of the name, but right on the coast, should be cool.

Sweet- we will hit it.

Anyone with local knowledge would be a plus... hint...;) hint!!!

A couple of suggestions:

1) be sure to check out Fort Point state park. A great place for an afternoon picnicing, etc. There is a floating dock on the north side of the park that is really cool. Lots of seals and harbor porpuses (sp?) around, and the mackeral fishing is fun if you fish. Some stripers off the point as well.

2) there are a bunch of class VI-type roads slightly inland in the Swanville/Dixmont/Monroe. It will be hard to track down some legal real wheeling but those roads are fun to just cruise around on and there are plenty. Do yourself a favor and buy a Dolorme Maine Gazeteer if you don't have one. If you make it to Dixmont make sure to stop into Nason's General Store.

3) X2 on Acadia. Not sure if you been there but if not plan on spending a day. The Beehive is my favorite hike. Short but really fun.

Good Luck!

If you head into Dixmont/Jackson on Rt. 7, there's a fire road running up a mountain that has some nice views at the top. Mt. Richard, maybe?

edit: I think it's called Firetower Rd. I'm positive it's a legal VI road; there are quite a few cabins along it.

Actually, now that I think of it we are going to be outside Bar Harbor the same week. Shoot me a PM if your interested in hooking up for a short hike in the Acadia area (I have two little ones so the days of 15-mile treks are over. I used to live up there and know the area pretty well.
