I finally found a deal on a Lowrance HDS-7 GPS and jumped on it. I have been playing with the Gaia Premium and bought a nice Bluetooth Antenna but it still left me with less than desirable results. I am stoked to get the Lowrance mounted in the 100 but want to see if anyone has gone down this road before?
I got turned onto these after seeing how well they work in the Baja race trucks. The way I see it I have two main options...
1. Build a flush mount bracket and mount it between the dash and center media/ac section... I'd have to make this custom as nothing exists like this for my application. I took the dash apart and it could work, I am just afraid it is going to wobble a lot.
The other option I see for plug in play is RAM Mounts triple locking suction cup mounts with 1.5" rated balls. This is used to mount monitors, GPS, and instrumentation in airplanes and helicopters... it will certainly take up some real estate (though my initial measurements show it won't block any of the road) and like anything NOT bolted down it has the chance of falling off. That said I used a single locking suction cup and it has held my iPad for miles of off road travel. I am leaning this way but it is about $75 to try it out. This unit also gives me the most flexibility in terms of height, angle, view etc. I have really come to love and trust the RAM Mount stuff.
Here is what I am trying to mount up it is about 4-5 pounds of shear GPS awesomeness.
And although this is in a Side by Side, this is the concept of how I want to mount mine... centered, above radio as low as possible on the dash...
The Ford Raptor guys have this mount which is rock steady, but I am not at the point of drilling into a perfectly good dash to get it to work...
