So David, Henry, and I are thinking about getting a ham radio license. Is anyone else interested?

Talk to Eric R. He is a operator, and he has been buggin me to get my license as well - so count me in.
Eric is very active in the amature radio community, you should see the antenna on his house! :)

UPDATE: Congrats to Jeff for getting his license!
FYI: mmw68 and his son are studying now. Is anyone else interested?

I'm interested but I want to know more about it first. I find my CB to work well on the trail and highway so I'm not sure of the benefit of going to a Ham radio. Isn't communication via a ham radio more structured and formal unlike a CB?

Hi Brett,
ham operators can use much more power and frequency choices so there are more responsibility and education required for those privileges in the interest of personal and public safety.

Ham radio can work hundreds or even thousands of miles. There are some super-cool things you can do with ham radio such as APRS - a method of having the general public track your position. Amateur radio will work even during a disasters when phone lines and cell operation are out.

Contact me if you want to learn some extended details (pm sent w/ contact info)

I have been looking into HAM very closely. I have a radio already picked out. Now all I gotta do is get some study materials. I am now researching antennas.

Personally, I think HAM is the way to go. Especially for really remote travel in places like Big Bend, or Death Valley..... places where you could die, possibly. That long range of HAM is amazing.

CB is good for close range convoy, but HAM is really where it's at for long distances. Especially when vehicles split up, but want to easily remain in contact over a LONG distance.

Which radio did you pick?

What are your criteria for an antenna?

When I get the the point of buying, I am getting the Icom dual band 2820H.... I have threads on radios and antennas in the electronics section here :)

Holy dead thread revival, Batman!

panoramic - does this offer still stand ? I would LOVE to learn about ham/amateur radio, and am considering adding either a CB or HAM radio to my truck.
