anyone have one?? i was looking into it and the radios are reasonable enough just wondering if we have enough interest to get a couple of us with them???

I have an ICON that is actually a narrow band that we use as a race radio. Standard SCORE issue and you don't need a license to use it since it is narrow band and you don't get the bleed over you do on the wide band frequencies.

One of the things I want to have is a 2M and looking at a Yaesu 2800.
Printed the pool questions to cram but dang...I hate memorizing stuff for the sake of memorizing for a test. Maybe April or May...

This is something that is on my "to do" list. I just haven't gotten around to it yet. But i def. plan on it.

Mo, is that ICON as "strong" (cant think of the correct word) as a 2m radio? In other words, does it get
out like a 2m would, just only with others that have the same exact race radio correct?

I've got West's book and a series of powerpoint presentations my old scoutmaster sent me. He's been a ham since the 60's and is a VE back in Illinois. He did endorse the Yaesu radios as very good for what it's worth.

I'm only thru the first few chapters. Time is my nemisis, but I'll get there eventually.

If you were to compare like radio's yes. Just like car stereos it depends on how many watts of power the radio puts out. The main difference in my radio is the frequency it transmits vs a comparable true 2 meter ham radio. IIRC it is 50watts on mine which is usually good for 8-10 miles with a good antenna and geography not too bad. Sometimes if the conditions are right you can get much further. I once used atmosheric skip to talk to a guy in Kentucky while driving my 4Runner down the 405 fwy in Torrance. That was with a normal wide band ham radio though.

I've been looking into this as well, and am considering going the www.hamtestonline.com route, as discussed in this thread:

Seems like the fastest way for me to feed the info into my ADD-riddled melon. You pay the $50, and you have a yearlong subscription to study and pass any or all of the tests.

I've noticed the price of the mobile units going down lately, seems like a good time to make the switch from CB to 2m. Hey Dave, are you going to become a Yaesu or Icom dealer in the near future?:D
