It's been a little over a week so I guess I should go ahead post the pics from G-dub forrest. We only ended up going on the Peters Mill trail but it was fun. It took a couple hours taking my time and stopping to let the dog run around some. Nothing difficult, anyone stock could make it, but it's nice to be lifted and protected anyway. The dog made a game of biting the braches that swept by the truck, it kept him busy while bouncing around the back!

Nice pics Mike, we sure need to make a trip out there. Looks like you had a blast. So any stoke rig can tackle the Peter's Mill?

Yea stock would be no problem. Maybe a little scrapage but definitly no damage. The worst part was one uphill with loose rocks but if you keep moving it's nothing.

The worst part was that the Elizabeth Furnace campground had plumbing issues so all water was secured and port-a-potty was the only thing there and it smelled bad enough to make you hurl. So we ended up only staying one night.

So we ended up only staying one night.

So did you pitch a tent out there? If so, what kind of tent did you use and where in the park you pitched it out?

Glad to hear you had a good time.
I spoke to some guys in NC that had GW experience. Sounds like 2nd Mountain and Dictum are good options. They are off 33 near Harrisonburg. Hope to get up there this fall.

There are a few campgrounds, we stayed at "Elizabeth Furnace" It is just your standard state park style camp.

Yea I'd like to try something a little more challanging and go with a group. I'm headed up this weekend to Lurray with the family to see the leaves and stuff so I dont know if I will get a chance to sneak away to hit some dirt or not!

Gents (& ladies?)
Cudos on the new chapter!
Shoot me a PM if you guys are going to be running anything in central Va. (GWNF, Shoe Creek, Big Meadows).
I’m always up for a run if I can get a day pass.
We have already gotten our 1st dusting of snow in the higher elevations. Hopefully this is a sign of good things to come:steer:

Hi,
I would like to do some wheelin up there sometime soon.
I think Mike, who started this thread, may be up for a moderate run.
I've heard that 2nd mountain may be fun. Dictum seems like it may be a bit tough.
Do you have other trails to recommend?

Sunday looks nice.

I’m certainly not an expert but I do know where most everything is. With the ledges at Dictum as the exception, they are all pretty much fire & hunter access roads. There are some steep rocky parts but pretty much any stock 4x4 won’t have too much problem. I have been amazed to see what people drag back in there during hunting season...Hondas, school buses, campers..etc. Although everything changes once it snows.

I would recommend going to Switzer Dam, head up Skidmore to Flagpole Knob then back down to Meadow Knob and out through Union Springs road. The view from the Knobs are spectacular this time of year and Union springs road has a couple of fun steep rocky grades.

Shoe Creek and Big Meadows are a little closer to you and are also right off the Blue Ridge Parkway. Again, the fall views are great.

Normally I would be all in for a Sunday ride but I already have plans to take the family to Williamsburg.

Let me know if you are in the area another time.
Be safe & have fun!

Sure, just lead the way!

My weekends are hit or miss so anytime a group wants to get together I'll try to make it. This weekend was nice down Skyline drive but I was with the family so I didnt leave the pavement.:crybaby:

I'll chime in with Charlton in congratulating you guys. I am in Charlottesville and would love to tag along sometime. I'm pretty familiar with The Big Levels (not Meadows) and Shoe Creek area and I have wheeled with Charlton in the area of GWNF off of RT 33. Never been to Taskers or Peters but would love to go.

BTW, you guys might enjoy the UFWDA Wheel-In at Oak Ridge in March.
