growl in front diff when 4X is engaged

Replacing the pinion bearing in the front diff is pretty hard.

But, before you decide that needs to be done, why are you asking? Only because of the "growl?" A growl is normal (though we could mean different things by the word). When you hear the growl, are you on pavement?
 
Mine has a bit of a growl, only on deceleration in 4x4 on any surface. No growl from the diff when just the hubs are locked in.
U-joints replaced, shaft spline tight, diff fluid at correct level.

Also check your diff fluid level.

These trucks can run a long time with various problems before breaking down. If your bearings are going bad you may have plenty of time to prepare for the fix.
