Just spoke with the guy who runs Overland Accessories (Jason). They're a new business, and are looking at creating a roof top tent at an affordable price (when I spoke with him, he was hoping to be closer to the $500 range than the $1000).

Anyway, they have about 15 pre-production models that they are selling off for $450. Jason told me that if I can get a group buy together, he'll give a discount on the items. (He also said that if I can't get a group buy, he'll give me a discount to help with shipping. Nice of him! )

Here's the ad I found for it:
All tents are new! Tents come with mounting brackets, extension ladder, cover and are all boxed. We are selling 35 pre-production tents at this price and only have 15 left.
Buy them now while supplies last for $450.
Please check us out @overlandaccessories.com We are a new company and have been featured in Land Rover Lifestyle Magazine.
Please call Jason Oropeza for sales and any questions @ 626 354-5540

He doesn't want to do shipping as he's a distributor, not a retailer, so he'd prefer pickup or for us to arrange our own. If we can get a group buy, someone can blitz down there and pick them up (probably me  ), and bring 'em all back. Or we can all chip in and arrange freight (much cheaper the more freight you ship).

Couple of questions I had on them (answers paraphrased):

1) Differences between the pre-production and production?

  • The floors in the pre-production are either fiberglass or plywood. [Note: he said most of them are fiberglass, but wasn't sure how many he had of each.] Wood wasn't the ideal choice as it can absorb moisture.
  • The production models will use nuts and bolts instead of rivets.
  • The ladder was changed as on tall trucks it can be too short and won't lock into place.
  • The colors will be different, orange will not be an option.

There was much more he told me (and I can't remember at the moment), he seems pretty knowledgable about this.

I don't really know anything about the company or Jason, but it seems pretty much on the up and up.

If you're interested in hopping into a group buy, let me know. If you have questions, let me know and I'll see what I can do to get them answered.

If only the funds :(. Sounds like a great deal.

Is this the same tent Yooper was running on the trailer at McGrew? Anyone know?

Is Orange a pre-production and one we would possibly get stuck with?

If we buy a few who gets stuck with plywood? I wouldn't want that since the tent would be on my trailer and in the elements although covered.

Where is the place to pick them up from?

What's the material canvas or typical tent nylon?

Is there a fly?

If nylon what is the mm rated polyurethane coating for waterproofness?

Enought ?'s for now :D

Same basic design. Does not have the aluminum floor.

Possible. First come first serve, so if you wanted a green I'm sure you could get it.

See above.

Where is the place to pick them up from?

Pasadena, CA. Near the Rose Bowl I think.

What's the material canvas or typical tent nylon?

Nylon.

Is there a fly?

Should be, there's one shown in the pics.

I'll ask this.

Let me answer your question with a question. No?

Been on the bottom of my list for a while now but at that price is worth looking into if it's a decent design.

I love my tent from ARB although it might cost a little more it appears much more durable. Sorry to be negative but just want people to enjoy a rooftop tent as much as we have. G - orange is a much better color than green anyway! Go Beavs!

I absolutely agree that it's very likely that the ARB's and traditional roof top tents are going to be more durable and better construction.

On the other hand....$450 or $1500-$2500. :hmm:

Yeah, for three to five times the tent that'd definitely be one that I'd enjoy. ;p

Definately at least worth learning more about
