recommend to pull the axles.
 
You need to pull the axles, I use the gasket and little fipg when I do them make sure studs are torqued and nuts, u do not need to pull axles completely out just far enough to clear out of the diff, mine as well pack them wheel bearings though, I'd rebuild dent axle if it was me unless you have done this recently
 
To do it right, the diif needs to come out, so knuckles, axles, etc. I never use the paper gasket, have done this enough to be tired of this game, Permatex Gray on clean surfaces, done.
 
Yep, 3rd comes out - but since you need a front axle rebuild to clean out the soup, you'll already have the inner driveshafts pulled - so aside from dropping the driveline back, it's just 12-14 nuts to break it loose from the axle & really do it proper.

Were you out playing in some deep stuff recently?

Something you might do while down there is run a yard of 3/8" fuel hose from the axle vent up the firewall & put a cheap fuel filter on the end (ziptie it to the brake lines over there, something like that). That front vent cap is known to clog & is worthless.
