I passed by a few signs this past weekend for the Great Western Trial. Being new to the west I had never heard of it so it's sparked some interest. I've searched the forums and haven't found anything on the trail. I did find the website online and it looks great! A true 4x4 trail that will run from Mexico to Canada. Wow, eat you heart out Oz, just kidding.

Only problem is the website doesn't look up to date so I was wondering if anyone out there has any additional info such as status of "proposed" connections, general trail rating, etc. Maybe some of my boys from CSC know something and wil chime in?

I think all of us that complain about the lack of "expedition" roads in North America should join in and support projects like this as much as possible.

i have hiked and biked some of the AZ parts,, unless they are widening the thing its not gonna be 4x4 friendly in many parts.

I think you might be talking about the Arizona Trail?

http://www.aztrail.org/

It is mostly a hiking trail from Mexico to the Utah border.

I haven't heard of one from Mexico to Canada. That would be nice!

I know of an overland, 4x4 route that spans the length of Oregon (Washington to California) along a central-eastern alignment. The route is about 450 miles in length, and goes through some amazing country. I've not driven much of it (about 30 miles or so north of John Day), but would certainly like to at some point...
I think there is a pretty big north-south chunk of California that can be traveresed in a four-wheel-drive, too - you just have to have the right maps and route descriptions.
Somehow, work continues to interfere with my free time.

A bunch of college guys from Indiana did the Great Wetern Trail in a FZJ80 and got some good press for a good cause out of it too - they are on MUD, but I forget the handle they go by. I'll search a little and maybe can find the link to their build thread and from there you can contact them direct. I think it took them 22 days going north to south.
