There is a vet located @ 45 minutes from us. I have been hearing great things about them for years. My wife has resisted changing from our current vet because she likes him so much. We have paid thousands of dollars to this vet. The last time I was in to get rabies shot I felt like I was dealing with a used car salesman. "You really need to do this test and while she is getting this done you better do this..." They used the typical fear mongering tactics, "if your dog has this it could die in 6 months..." They were up to $600 in optional, but your dog could die, recommendations when I drew the line. I was so sick of the sales pitch and said "just give her the rabies shot!"
Thursday I came home to a badly limping dog. I knew it was not good. Friday we made an appointment with the new vet. The initial consultation with X-rays came to a grand total of $39! X-rays at our old vet were $150-$250 minimum. The dog had a torn ACL and needed surgery. They scheduled that for the next morning. When I picked up my dog the vet was very nice and the total was, drumroll, $200 including meds and the cone! Holly crap! My friend had the same operation on their lab at our vet for $2,000.
All I can say is this is a sad testament on how typical vets make their money. I spoke with our new vet about how they cost their services. They know what their costs are and build in a reasonable margin. Their business plan is molded around getting services to all pet owners at a reasonable margin. They do not price based on the traditional emotional, milk the customer model. What an amazing business model for a vet to follow. BTW, They were doing a cranking business! The volume I saw was unreal. I say good for them and thank you very much!
