Thicker granite 3mm doesn't necessarily require a laminated edge. 2cm does. So the 3mm may be cheaper if you wan ta 3cm edge profile. If you want a larger edge profile, go with 2cm and have a mitered front edge. If your granite installer is good at what they do, you will have a very hard time identifying the edge. They cut both corners on a miter and then match the new laminated edge grain with the top piece so it appears seamless. If they laminate

Neither should ever break if installed correctly.

Any granite shop should have lots of samples in the showroom of both styles.

Mitered: - notice how it looks like it is a solid slab. I personally like the appearance of a 2 or 3" thick slab. If you're going this route, there's really no reason to spend more on 3cm slab.

vs. non-mitered - in this style you'll be able to see the line if you look closely. You can't match the same way as a mitered edge.

I have a bullnose edge .... and I can see the faint line where the pieces are laminated/joined if I look for it However given the normal state of affairs of my kitchen counter covered with half filled glasses and cups and school lunch boxes etc .... and the random pattern of natural stone ... I never notice it.

(unfortunately my kitchen doesn't look like the showroom kitchens -- even when we clean up! It is the core of the house combined with a family room and breakfast/lunch table)

I think the line visibility depends a lot on the granite. If it's reasonably uniform in color or has relatively small crystals no-one will ever see it. If it has big veins of contrasting color, it's a bit more obvious. I think it's just easier to hide with a mitered corner.

Also the mitered corners are cheaper because the two faces showing are already polished. The bull nose they have to cut and then polish and, at least the places around here, charge quite a bit more for that. That was the main reason we went with the mitered edge.

The biggest issue I have keeping it clean is that we have hard water. Our counters are dark color and just like on a black car, water spots, hand smudges, etc show up really well. It looks good and was pretty reasonably priced, but I'm not sure if I'd go that dark again. If it were up to me I'd just have stainless counters with open racks underneath, but alas it was not.

Marble can be stained. Granite not so much. I love granite. You can pull stuff straight out of the oven and sit it down without burning down the house. Chipped? Please; laminate is so much softer.

Anyway, normally granite comes in 2cm or 3cm which translates to a bit over 3/4" or 1 1/4". There is no question that the 3 cm looks better. No other choice.

Agree. Love the stuff. Best countertops ever.

just bit the bullet and had 3cm granite counter tops installed.

Looks nice. Any input?

I'd personally stick with the 1" thick slab for a kitchen, to me the 3/4" would look too thin. It looked like they could do just about all the edges they were offering with that thickness. The prices ranged from no charge for the edge we picked to $6 - $10 lf.

Just remember one thing leads to the next. Wallpaper stripped off the walls and refinish the drywall and paint and now a new floor :bang:

I have been looking for Granite & Cabinets Suppliers and I found this one www.granitekitchenstudio.com. I am not sure about the quality they offering. Has anyone have looked into this before? They says "We work hard to find and work with stone and cabinetry suppliers all over the tri-state area. This effort is to provide our customers with high quality products and convenient locations to check and choose your stone directly from our suppliers’ yard and warehouse. We are also affiliated with many professional institutions that provide training and enhance our ability to better serve our customers. Please check our suppliers and professional affiliations.
". If you have any other options you know, please post them here. Thanks!

I think the countertops look great. Edging is more expensive the more complicated it is. 2 cm typically has to be backed for countertops which will bring the price closer to 3CM anyways. 3CM is common across the US. 2CM is more for decorative work and you will find companies that do a lot of decorative work may offer the 2CM for countertops. When I am not off roading in my new JK i am working on my national fabricator network with granitemakeover.com

Thanks everyone! I had forgotten about this thread. We went with 3 cm. We also dropped the bar height part of the island down to counter height and installed a bookcase end for cookbooks. It really turned out nice!
