Factory style was different. A lot smaller and mounted higher where the dash pad is. Stopped in the US market with the 68 model. Continued in otherarkets that didn't have padded dash. Believe it was ConFer who first made a grab handle that looked like that.

Maybe this photo shows my grab bar better.

Believe it was the 83+ model that had the grab handle on the door header like those. Found the late model header with fixed nuts just need to search a wrecking yard to see if I can find handles with the same spacing.

That is correct. I used the holes that were in my 78's dash that I assumed was for a bar. I remember now that they were only Toyota parts pre 70s. I copied the Con-Fer item I had seen posted from time to time.

I used the overhead handles from a 60 series in the top of my 45 door frame for the :princess:

I used a 64' grab bar on my 74'

The holes were already under the dash pad... the grab bars were used throughout production (but not NA cruisers :) )... and think they are still available btw

Pic two is a late model with one from factory
Pic three is a new grab bar

I've got a grab handle that mounts to the factory holes on the passenger side. It came out of a rolled 71ish hardtop that I found dumped in the bush... spring green originally and then painted metallic Forrest green.

I've bought and installed a Confer grab bar like this about 20 years ago when I stopped at SOR. Unfortunately it is chrome and it starts to rust now and then. I polish it off routinely do that it doesn't get worse.

Since this thread started I been able to secure some factory over the door grab handles used in eighties. Parts diagrams only list one per vehicle, driver's side. Late model door headers have the extra threaded hole on both sides.

I drilled holes in mine on the 45 and added an overhead one from an FJ60 on the passenger side for my wife, who is vertically challenged (4’11”)

Do you have a picture of them?

Are they like this one?

As stated previously I found it out in the bush.

I am not a fan of 60 series over the door handles. Soft and sag. Personally like the A pillar handles. I installed a matching driver side handle on the passenger A pillar in my FJ62. I also installed non US 60 series B pillar handles. Considered installing a handle over the door on the driver's door just because I have a number spares. I use the grab handle mainly to save the outside of the bottom seat cushion. 60 series are famous for breaking down. As much as getting in sliding out is hard on the seats. I use what ever is available to lift myself over the edge verses just sliding out. 40 series does have the advantage of a running boards, which I do use.

Here are a few pictures. First is the handle attach to a loose 84 HJ47RV door header piece. And another one next to a 60 series handle. Which would fit the stock holes.

Next is the stock location for the 40 series except it's on the passenger side which didn't have one from the factory (yes that is a tie-dye head liner).

Next is the location I think I may install them. My 79 will have an H55F and other not US market items so no real concerned about being 100% original.

What I would really like is a FJ62 grab handle from the A pillar. But doubt I could bring myself to drill and install nutserts in a rust free windshield frame.

Every Toyota 3X4 I have bought that is newer than the 89 Land Cruiser has had A pillar grab handles on bought sides. 100 series 2nd & 4th gen 4Runners, two first gen Tundras and a second gen Sequoia. All have had grab handles on both A pillars. Lately bought a 5th gen 4Runner and it only has one on the Passenger side. Has a few less than our 4th 4Runner and a few would expect it have by now. One I miss the most is the driver A pillar grab handle.

I just ordered these: 2x Grab Bars Handle Bar Solid Steel Front & Rear For Jeep Wrangler JK 2007-2017 | eBay - https://www.ebay.com/itm/193791409362

I planned to cut the 90° angle off and bolt these to the existing bolt. Let see if it works. View attachment 2696465

Looks like it uses one bolt in the A pillar and two going straight up. Not sure how this would work with a single bolt with all the leverage at a single point. Factored uses two mounting points and stays close to the mounting points. That reduces the leverage. If I was will to drilling into the windshield I would install the grab bar used on the FJ62. That location on the A pillar starting using close to thirty years ago on most my vehicles. Drilling holes in the door header doesn't bother me as those are not that hard to find or that expensive. Think I would make a bracket that bolts to the header and not drill into the windshield frame.
