can anyone recommend a good machine shop to lightly shave a head and do a valve grind? I have to do the head gasket on my 80. I will bring the head in myself.

No personal experience..but isnt Bond one of those places that pumps out the fast, cheap rebuilds?
Bond and Alecs are not the same thing you will get a better Job out of Alecs, i spoke to Doug this morning and he said to give hime a call directly at Alecs and he would be happy to give you some more info as to why they will cost more and further to that he said that he could do a discount for a club member.
I have absolutly nothing to gain by promoting Alecs, it is the machine shop that i have always used and have not had a problem with, i have not used bond but have heard they dont do a very good job thus being cheeper, you get what you pay for in this instance.

thanks Rob. I have no interest in opening it up twice so I would definitely lean towards alec's. I was just surprised at the difference. When I spoke to them they quoted me a bunch of individual costs totalling $900 to get the head shaved and a valve grind (with me providing the seals). Bond quoted $320 for the same thing even when I double checked they would be nipping valves so i could reuse the shims etc... weird. I will call alec's again when ready.
