I've been using this mapping software the last few trips... I'm HOOKED!

https://www.cartotracks.com/maps

Totally worth the cost of each park! The dang map tells you where you are! IN the map! DONE.

It uses the other app as a host. But the guy has charted every park with some device he has on his vehicle. He's not charting them in the office. If I understand it correctly.

He has ridden the trails and collected data on every map except the upcoming KOH map. And the hammer town map showing vendors will be free.

This works off of the GPS feature of your phone or tablet, no cell service required!

The recent jump in technology is the ability to integrate GIS metadata into a PDF, so that your device's GPS signal can locate you properly on the PDF. Couple of apps out there use similar tech: UlmonPro-CityMaps2Go, MotionX-GPS.

Correct. The trick is, and as bhmapping and I tried privately... having a PDF map that is accurate. That requires someone mapping the trail system and sharing that data as a PDF. Which is what cartotracks is doing. Well worth $5 or whatever it is he is charging.

actually the trick is just having a map that is to scale to start with. any properly scaled map can be georeferenced and exported to pdf and loaded in the app. The cool thing about the avenza app is that it will load your data off the device. I have done a couple of the local hiking trails and they are dead on. It also does georeferenced jpg and tiff images so it would be possible to make your own maps without having to have expensive software.
