So I could have posted this in the 80's section but I wanted to cast the net a little wider.
I built a wiring harness for my sub tank install. I wanted to utilize a section of the factory wiring that was already in place. There was an empty plug behind the DS kick panel and one on the other end that exists the truck under the rear DS door. (I was told this is the factory set up for the transfer pump, I am begining to wonder) I wanted to use OEM plugs and pins. I needed 4 wires, 2 grounds and 2 12v+ to run from the dash switch to the pump and solenoid.
If you are not familar with the Toyota pins, they come with a length of wire already fastened to the correct pin (refered to as a splice). You get the gauge they come with regardless the existing gauge of this installed harness. On the factory harness a plug always has the same pin size but the wire gauge can be different.
My question/concern is that I have a Frankenstein combination of wires and splices. I have like 3 or 4 different gauge wires making up the entire harness. I starts out like 16 gauge goes down to 18 for 3" to 4"(factory splice) and then back to 16 for a foot or so then to like 14 gauge into the harness side of the plug and then the pump looks like it has 16 gauge.
My primary concern is the higher gauge section. I don't know how many amps the pump or solenoid will draw but it will only be on occasionally and only for as long as it takes to empty the 13 gallon tank.
The cautious in me tells me to pitch Frankenstien and build a new harness to match my lowest gauge.
Can anyone give me some advice and education here?
