Yeah I know, it's a boat but I was wondering if anyone had experience in gelcoat. My boat scraped the bow against a concrete dock during a storm basically sanding the gelcoat down, removing the shine. I tried a repair kit of gelcoat, followed the instructions but it doesn't really match. The area is only 6"x 3", small but it bugs me. Any thoughts?

Ive done some gelcoat work. What color is your boat? If its anything besides a fairly standard white it gets more difficult to match 100%.

even if it's white, unless the hull is brand-f'n-new, you will never match it. Just fix it and put a sticker over the patch.:grinpimp: I have three gel coat crunches on the bow I need to fix.. I might put on a keel guard to cover the patches.

It's older, I'm not so much worried about a great match and I am about sealing the gelcoat. It's on the upper part of the bow and I'm just concerned about water being forced into the gelcoat if it's not sealed.

I've seen guys use keelguard, it's pricey and tough to work with and if you have bottom paint you have to sand it off. Our beaches here are just sand, it's not really an issue here.

it's white. I thought about thinning the gelcoat and using an aersol sprayer. Would that work and what thinner would work?

If its older and white and stained getting a good match will be next to impossible. You can buy white base gelcoat and try tinting it. Maybe try the white with a little tan tinter but you would just have to keep experimenting to find a close match. You should be able to pick up a reducer at your gelcoat supplier as well as the tint. Just a dab of the tint will go a long way though. If you have a glossy finish Duratec will add gloss and also thin the gelcoat.

These websites have lots of good info (lots of how to and ideas from the projects).

No problem...good luck. I helped a friend restore an old Whaler Mantauk and it was a PITA but the end result was awesome.

West Marine or any other marine store will have tint for gelcoat. You can pratice getting it right by dabing a little of your mixture without the hardener in it, on you hull. Good luck.

What's the best way to apply that stuff to a large area? Brush or roller?
