Went to Co Springs Pikes Forest Park Service Ranger Station and picked up my Firewood permit and my Pikes Forest Service Map..Hey Look who made the cover on the map!
fj40 forest map 179.webp

Not my 40 of course but a Tip O' Hat to the Ranger District for recognizing the Mighty Land Cruiser FJ40 for what it is....The King of the Rocky Mountains! Ok a bit grandiose there, but very Cool!

Anyhoo, took the '91 GMC 3/4 ton conversion van with all the seats and bed/couch removed and it makes a great wood hauler! Darn near a cord per trip! Up to Divide, then up CR5 into the forest area. Fired up the Chainsaw and filled her up. Heavy loads but made it back down to the Springs twice. Good excercise, beautiful scenery with the Aspens glittering. Kind of hairy taking the van up some of those access roads but the Michelin road tires survived intact. I'm a beat piece of meat now after all the woodwork. Wife, Sister and Son helped.
Getting acclimated to the altitude after moving from So. Florida just a day before Irma hit. No more of that frigging heat and humidity! It's GREAT to be BACK in COLORADO!!!!

Very Cool wonder if anyone in the club can recognize the 40 in the picture.
Curious about the wood, is it green or down and dry? Assume Ponderosa Pine?

According to the Ranger it was cut about 7 months ago and is decked, (branches cut off and somewhat stacked.) I went yesterday and the day before and there were 3 sites, I got mine at the first site and it was about done for and the second site looked pretty lean and I have not seen the third site. There were some older logs that may have been beetle kill mixed in but it should burn ok, could use a bit more seasoning. The sites are up Rd 5 and then it kinda turns into forest rd 357 and then onto 357B. It was pretty easy to find. Yes, mostly Ponderosa pine. BTY it was $40 per cord. There is another large site further north in another area that is $20 per cord over a wide range of forest where you can drive in and cut down and/or gather what you want.

Anyone who wants firewood, I have plenty you can have. I have a number of trees burned on my property during the Black Forest fire a couple of years ago, dead but only the outside got scorched and the wood inside is in great shape. I also have a couple of Beetle trees I need to have removed, so if anyone wants firewood there's plenty for the taking. Call/text 505-453-7484 or email jdegani@gmail.com.
