This is where I found free topo and major roads for the various US states I've travelled to. There are some free Garmin softwares you'll need. MapManager, MapInstall....etc? Also I use BaseCamp for managing tracks and waypoints and trip planning. In BC I use the backroad mapbook for everything though. Not sure if you'll find good dirt roads files for free online.
