Can someone tell me what years 80's had lockers and is there a certain year or option you need to look for?

Believe lockers became optional in '93.

I would love to have a LX450 or 40th Anniversary Edition '97, but they're both pretty pricey to buy (...for a 15 year old vehicle...) and fuel.

If you're looking, Scott, I believe Bodean is about to put his '96 LX450 on the market. It's a nice ride, fo' sho'.

EDIT: Here's Slee's guide to 80s. Might be helpful for you. http://sleeoffroad.com/newbie/newbie100.htm

I have asked Bodean about his, it's too nice for what I want to do. I would consider trading my 40 for the right one. what I'm really looking for is something mechanically sound, the body really don't matter. Oh yeah A/C too!

In the US 80 series had factory front and rear lockers as an option from 93 through 97. 98 and 99 100 series had rear locker as an option. If you start looking at non us trucks then there were and are more years and series out there with lockers.

You already have your answer on the lockers but here is a little more. The 91 and 92's had the 3FE engine and the A440F transmission. Dead solid reliable engine but a little less powerful than the 93-97 1FZ. the earlier transmission is a little easier to use in motor swap situations abd does not have a viscous coupler in the transfer case like the later models. 91 and most 92's also havve a semi-float rear axle with drum brakes which is a little less desirable than the 93-97 full floater rear and disc brake rear. I personally like the earlier model cloth interior over the later leather seating surface and the manual adjustment is more reliable than the later power seat offering. 91 and 92 can use a 15" wheel but 93-97 needs a 16" wheel or spacers to run smaller.

That said, I would not pass up a good deal on a 91-92 but the 93-97 is usually a better choice for most people. A later full float rear can be had fairly cheap and is a direct bolt in from what I am told. ARB's can be had for about the same $ as most folks want for a truck with factory lockers and are arguably stronger.

Give us an idea of your plans for building this truck and I'll try to keep an eye out for you.

...Oh, and 97 was the last year for a timing chain. After that it's a timing belt. Just something else to consider. The 97 I had was equiped with the factory front and rear lockers and was pretty sweet. Just had tooooooooo much rust underneath to keep messing with it. It got about 15mpg tops.

What I want is something that will do 3 and some 4 rated trails and something I could drive to the liquor store if I wanted to. I will take my 40 on 50 mile road trips now(that's my comfort limit) so that being said I would like it to be able to see some pavement time. I don't have to be pretty but A/C is a must (I'm sure they all have it) I love my 40 just don't love the ride and no A/C. I guess I'm getting soft.

That won't be hard to manage at all. These things are amazingly capable right out of the box. Lockers, lift, 35" tires, and a little tube and you are ready to roll. I'll keep an eye out.

I love my '94, even tho it's unlocked. Be patient and you will find a good deal on one with lockers. I remember just after I bought mine I saw one come up for sale not far from you with lockers for about 4500. I will eventually throw in some ARB's or TJM's, but for now it does just fine.

As mentioned above, the 91-92's have alot of potential, and are fairly cheap. You can put an H41 or H55/Toybox/Splitcase behind that 3fe. That's something you can't do with the 1fz engines.

Maintenance tends to cost more, and fuel mileage is not good. But mpg sucks in a 40 also.

I like them both. I'm not ready to pull trigger yet.

Not sure if Cory is still wanting to sell it, but he had a feeler up a few months ago. The paint job is a little bright, but he's never had any trouble keeping up with us on the 4 rated stuff. 94 Landcruiser - TTORA Forum

I've seen it on craigs list. I have a lead on a 40th anniversary addition. Dunno what to do... I guess if I go 80 I will have to sell 40:(. I'm at a crossroads in my wheelin career.

If I could go back 3 years, I would be an 80 owner. I enjoy my tacoma, but passed up a good deal on an 80 that I shouldn't have.

So if a man was going to purchase a lift kit (for a 80)which one do you get? And what would tire size be?

If you add a winch bumper, the OME 850/860 combo sits fairly level and looks good with 315s. There are many 80s set up this way and it looks good. Some run it without correcting caster, but I didn't take that chance.

Would you have to re-gear with tires that big or would have enough punk? I'm going to look at a 40th anniversary 80 in the near future.

I've heard mixed opinions. Some say its fine on 35/37's but my uncle swore his was gutless with 33's.

That was a sweet truck

He tried to sell it to me for 3500.00 with 240k on the ticker. Instead I paid 6k more for a tacoma that had 140k. Regret it everyday I see an 80!
