Full susp or hardtail?

well, still waiting for my perfect bike to pop up on CL.

Amazing how many people say they have paid $2000 for their bike...
(now selling for $600).

Strangely, also seems like most are 17" or so. Is everybody short or is there an advantage to very small bikes?

Anyhoo, in the mean time while waiting, I've gotten a pretty rough Trek front Susp only bike to play with and work on a bit.

Feels pretty good actually, the front susp does take a lot of the rougness out already. I can see why a Hardtail is still a viable option, even with DS around everywhere.

(now if I can only get that seat post unstuck.... :o)

Well-
If you want to buy a somewhat more modern bike i would get either a 29er hardtail or 26 squish.

At your budget, i would look at the 29er hardtails. there are some really good deals to be found on craigslist. Matter o fact, the redline 29er fits the bill nicely and can be had a reasonable price!

I had to chime in with my 2 cents worth, I consider myself a moderate rider, and have ridden both hard and soft tails, the soft tail was great for blowing threw stuff down hill, but for general rideing and climbing I go with a hard tail. I would recomend getting fitted before purchaseing, go to a bike store and have them measure you, ensure that the guy working there knows what the heck he is talking about. This will give you a size to start with, then go test ride as many bikes as you can until you find what YOU like, bikes are like butts we all have one and our preferances. I like the Cannondale but I like the stiff frame with little flex, good for climbing, not very cushy though. Good luck and happy rideing!

I would recommend a hardtail, less stuff to worry about, less stuff to maintain. I have run the gambit, I started out on a $500 hardtail in college, now I ride a >5K dual 6 inch travel maverick. Most of the time though, I find myself wishing I had a low maintenance steel hardtail that I know will work when I jump on and ride it.

As for used, you might get lucky with something good condition, but if you get a 5 yr old used full suspension, you are likely looking at upgrading bushings, suspension parts, etc. These things all wear out pretty quickly unfortunately. Around here in CO, you couldn't pay me to buy a 5 year old full suspension bike, they just get abused too much.

I can relate to your gearhead mentality, but trust me on this, when you want to be working/spending money on your truck and your mountain bike takes a dump, forcing you to spend money on it, it gets old.

good points!

get an old santacruz blur . 500-800$ for around a 02-03 or so used . you will be floored im sure .
