fuel pump problem?

Hey all,
After months of sitting parked in the barn, my 1980 40 won't start up. It turns over fine, and starter fluid or gas in the carb will fire it up just fine, but it won't keep running. There is no fuel pumping to the carb, or from the fitting out of the pump if the lines are pulled. It seems to me that the pump is shot, though I am not sure if my diagnosis is complete. Any ideas?

Not a good idea to steal from your own work force. :rolleyes:

We put a fuel line into a separate tank to avoid the oem tank and any potential issues there. The pump is not pulling fuel at all. Do these pumps fail? How do you test them?

Can you clarify the above? I kinda doubt the fuel pump failed....

I would work backwards.

Take yoru air filter off, engage the accelerator cable and see if you get a squirt of gas into the carb. If no fuel, then...

Unscrew the fuel pipe at the carb, hold a container under the pipe and depress the pedal. If you get fuel, then I suspect your carb is fouled and needs rebuilding. Simpler...there is a small screen at the top of the carb, next to where the fuel line enters. It catches debris and might need to be cleared out. If not, then...

If there is no fuel, then continue to work backwards. Is the fuel pulling from the filter. Remove and replace the filter with a $2 valvoline one...anyone will due to check fuel flow. If not, then....

As Junior or Jimbo....cause I am at a loss.
 
Thanks for the ideas. Pulled the fuel line at the carb and it was dry. Worked backward from there to the pump and then the filter. The filter had fuel in it but it was from last time it was running. The fuel lines before and after the filter were bone dry and would seem to suggest that the pump is not pulling at all.

Any other things to check...would vacuum issues prevent any fuel from being delivered?
 
Fuel in the tank?
Hook the compressor up and blow some air back into the tank to see if the outlet
is clogged.
I know on my rig if I disconnect my fuel filter and there is fuel in the tank
it will flow out.
 
dry rotted diaphram on the fuel pump. happened to wilma's 87 2f after sitting for a couple of years. realatively cheap part as far as toyota parts go.
 
Agree with fogblanket. If you've bypassed the tank and there's nothing coming out the output of the pump, it's dead. I've had it happen sometimes when a pump is dry for a while. I would strongl suspect the diaphragm. ToyoDIY shows a rebuild kit if they are still available and you want to go that route.
 
looks like you have to get the smae fuel pump as the 87 2f. unfortunately those are not rebuildable (btdt) and if you get a new fuel pump or pull it out to check it make sure you put the spacer back in. otherwise the truck will run fine for about 20 minutes until the fuel pump arm brakes off and drops to the bottom of the oil pan. then you are stuck with a brand new broken fuel pump arm and the fun time of droppoing the oil pan to get the broken arm out :(

Well, that sounds like fun and thanks for the heads up. I don't remember seeing the three spacers when I removed the pump...maybe they were stuck on the pump making it look like one piece. Will swap the spacers over to the new pump.
 
just a heads up! thats TWO gaskets and ONE spacer.. not 3! :)

I could have been wrong but I thought if the pump you replaced didn't have a spacer then the new one doesn't need one either. Compare the pumps side by side if you still have the old one and it should be clear if you do or don't

Indeed, big thanks y'all. I ordered the pump with gaskets and spacer, hopefully will solve the problem. Details to follow.......
