1987 Toyota FJ60 Land Cruiser 5spd converted turbo diesel! Asking $11, 500
I am selling a 1987 Toyota Land Cruiser FJ60 that has been converted to a turbo diesel using a 4-cylinder Toyota 3B diesel engine from a 1984 Toyota BJ60 and a Toyota Supra turbo. Here is how I ended up owning this amazing vehicle: A year or two ago, a gentleman by the name of Chris Lynch came across a '84 BJ60 engine in Portland, OR (which was in strong condition and had roughly 150k miles on it at the time) and decided to put it in a 1987 FJ60 5spd he currently owned (with a little over 200,000 miles on the body). Chris is an excellent Toyota Land Cruiser mechanic/conversion specialist known around the country for his Toyota imports and his quality diesel conversions. Chris’ importing business allows him access to Toyota Land Cruiser parts from around the world. This particular project was for his brother who lives in Indiana. Chris decided to rebuild the engine from the bottom up prior to doing the conversion. The entire conversion process was documented on the website IH8MUD - Home (see: https://forum.ih8mud.com/diesel-tech-24-volts-systems/182292-another-3b-conversion.html) After the conversion was completed, Chris and his brother drove the Cruiser from Portland, OR to Valparaiso, IN with no issues and the car was then garage stored. Once in IN, they decided to add the rebuilt Toyota Supra turbo to make it more highway-worthy. This allows the Cruiser to drive comfortably at 65-70 mph on the highway. I have been getting 15-16 mpg around town and 20+ mpg on the highway with larger wheels/tires. Compare that to a standard gas Cruiser that gets roughly 10-12 around town and maybe 14-15 on the highway. Since I have owned it, I have run it on a mix of regular diesel and a good amount of biodeiesel from OM Fuels in N. Charleston.
Here is the drivetrain and modifications list when I bought it:
- 3B diesel engine (engine rebuilt approx. 20,000 miles ago, compression in the 420’s across the board, rebuilt inject diaphram, new waterpump) – I have since only put approx. 10,000 miles on the Cruiser
- Toyota Supra turbo (rebuilt)
- H55 5 speed and transfer case that came with the 3B
- 4:11 diffs with FJ62 front axle
- OME lift (roughly 2.5") w/ greasable anti-inversion shackles and spring pins.
- Mickey Thompson Classic II wheels (8” rims) with set of almost new Pro Comp Extreme Mud Terrain 33x12.50 tires (very little wear on set and I just replaced one due to nail in sidewall)
- New 2.5’ exhaust Edelbrock SDT muffler
- Set of FJ62 side mirrors (which look/function much better than the stock FJ60 mirrors)
Since I've owned the Cruiser, I've done the following work: added a $500 stereo system with a new head unit and all new speakers (it had nothing when I got it), new radiator, new oil pan gasket, new battery, new front (main) seal, new shifter boot, new logos on the sides, installed a front bumper (previous owner had a massive brush guard/winch that I had removed), fixed the horn, fixed the windshield wiper sprayers, fixed the interior lights, installed a new throttle cable, fixed the starter, replaced all filters, had the transmission flushed and the oil changed every 4,000 miles and recently purchased the 3B Toyota manual that will come with the vehicle. Most importantly, my mechanic just finished installing an A/C SYSTEM! Given that BJ60s are from Canada, most 3B engines didn't come with stock A/C. A/C units for these are relatively easy to install, but hard to find. Before purchasing the Cruiser, Chris promised to find me an A/C system by summer and he found one in EXCELLENT condition. Luckily, b/c the Cruiser is an FJ60 (which previously had A/C), all the necessary controls were already there. The A/C unit, plus installation, cost me around $900. You can tell, this is a very unique Cruiser.
Although the paint is starting to fade (mainly just on the hood) and there are a few bumps and nicks on the body, the truck is in very good condition with essentially NO RUST (other than a small amount of bubbling by the front windshield and a little surface rust starting to show on a couple little nicks). I also had the Cruiser bottom painted after I bought it. The lift on the Cruiser is not extravagant and makes the Cruiser look much better than the stock set-up. I promise, when I first heard it had a lift, it made me hesitant, but when you see it you will agree. I cannot tell you how many comments this truck receives (literally more than one a day).
I could go on and on, but I'd prefer to talk further in person. Please know that parting with this vehicle is incredibly painful for me and is solely the result of an unfortunate change in finances. Believe me, I flew all the way to IN to drive this car back here 6 months ago! I never planned to sell this vehicle and will wait until I get a reasonable price for it. I don’t have to sell it, but I feel it makes long-term financial sense. I will probably start posting the Cruiser on national websites in the next few weeks depending on the local response. Please feel free to email or call me anytime to discuss: 843-384-0199. I must warn you in advance that I am not a mechanic but I work with an excellent one and I may be able to redirect some of your questions if need be. I would really like to see the Cruiser end up in the hands of someone that will appreciate its uniqueness and continue to make improvements. Just to clarify, the Cruiser needs NOTHING at the moment. If I were hanging onto it, I'd probably install some new carpet but that’s it. I live on Folly Beach and work in downtown Charleston. I am free to show it almost anytime. I use it as a daily driver and it has performed excellent. Please contact me for more pictures or to arrange a showing.
