Took My FJ to have the front end done because I have recently changed the suspension. The techs at the garage told me that It would be a waste of time and money because the tire rods were wore out. Stating to much play and clanking?? Has anybody had to deal with this? Or is the this garage just trying to get more money?

First off, seeing you are local, you should visit the Olde North State Cruisers section and connect with our local club.

Help with some symptoms, what does it drive like? I'd suggest putting it on jack stands and see what kind of play you have in the front end...

I have done a run with the group and been to a monthly meeting. But haven't had much time lately...NO excuses!
Truck drives fine. Nothing out of the ordinary. Only took the FJ in to be serviced cause of recommendation that a alignment be done with that type of work. Didn't touch LCA's from the last time I had a front end alignment done a few months ago. (By same garage). Will say that on a occasion will hear like a knock (metal) or something seems loose when going over bumps. The steering is responsive and have no vibrations while going down the road.

Tie rod ball joints (the inner part under the boot) can wear out. The easiest test is to jack that wheel off the ground, then grab the wheel at 3:00 and 9:00 and push back and forth - in the direction of steering. There is a little bit of play normally in the steering rack, but if you can get a full degree of movement, then its too much. If both front wheels are off the ground, it may be harder to test, because the left/right movement of you pushing on the tire will actually move the steering rack back and forth and both wheels will turn. Your tire shop should be able to demonstrate this for you as well, if you don't want to jack up your truck in the driveway. Replacement (Toyota branded) parts should be under $100 for each side, but note that they do not come with the jam nut, so be sure to recycle the one from the old tie rod or purchase a new nut.

10/4 BMThiker. Was told that it was the Inner tie rod. I understand that those parts will go bad. Just didn't think this soon. But have wheeled a bit so I can't complain. Should consider myself luck that was the only thing wrong. Think I have ordered the entire unit. At least that's how it looked on the diagram. Still going to check 9 and 3 and go from there. Thanks!
