I have been studying the FSM in anticipation of changing the front rotors and pads. My understanding is that this requires removing the bearings, axle seals, hub, etc.

Is this different than the 80 series, where everyone says it is a quick, simple procedure (apparently it needs to be given the quick wear of the 80 series brakes!)? If so, and I need to repack bearings, I'll probalbly change everything out at once- new rotors, new bearings, new seals, new pads, possibly rebuild the calipers. I haven't had any brake problems and my shop says they look fine right now- but with 135K miles, I know this will need to be done in the future.

Any thoughts?

I would hope at 135kmi the caliburs don't need rebuilding and rotors don't need replacing (maybe turning). To protect the caliburs, I would change the brake fluid since it attracts moisture and moisture causes corrision. The wheel bearing need repacking every 50-75kmi unless water crossings are part of the driving routine. It is logical to do this while working on the front brakes. I see the FSM doesn't want the bearings and outer races reused when the hubs are removed. I'd get the tech's opionion on that one. Is there some reason they can't be inspected and if they look and feel good, then reused? I've got two old Volvos in the driveway, each with nearly 300kmi and the original wheel bearings are still running fine in both. The wheel bearings are probably only $100 and I can certainly understand some thinking it's cheap insurance. My thinking is I purcahsed a high quality vehicile so I wouldn't need to replace components starting at 100kmi if I do my part (periodic maintenance like greasing and changing fluids and filters). If you do the job yourself, please post the socket size for the lock nut and if a standard wall thickness deep-dish socket works OK (FSM calling for a SST). jp

The rotors can be turned on the vehicle. If Toyota (your dealer) states otherwise, it is becasue they do not have a machine to do this i.e. turn on the vehicle. I have had both 100's turned at the dealer here in Lex.

One toyota mechanic (now indep. toyota shop owner) told me the Koyo wheel bearings (at least on the mini's/4runners) last 200K mi before replacement. I've got 180k mi (just repacked last summer) and they've still looking good. I couldn't imagine getting any less than 200K mi on them (no playing U-boat captain, though; if you do this, I'd repack ASAP). I'm kind of surprised the repack interval is 50-75K mi, as most toyota truck manuals spec 30K mi for the wheel bearings (and 60k mi for the birfields). I'm not sure if the 100s use the same 54mm axle nuts as on LC up through the 80 series and trucks up to 1995. I know the '96-'02 4Runners used a different SST for the front (from what the OTC catalog says), so it wouldn't entirely surprise me if the 100 had something different. Can anyone confirm this?
