Rocky Mountain Overland, is a Denver-based overlanding group. On Saturday April 9, 2016 we are offering a free class on backcountry communications and static display of vehicles & equipment. We did this last year and demystified ham radio for literally dozens for offroaders. The helped people understand what the advantages of VHF & UHF ham radio are, how to select a radio and antenna, how to get licensed etc. There is also an element on APRS which is a great integration of GPS-based mapping and radio. In 2015, we had around 75 hardcore overlanders, many of whom went on to get licensed.

There is no cost to attend.

I attended this event in Denver last Saturday.

It was impressive to see a large group of 4x4 enthusiasts and vendors with many vehicle brands represented. There were Fords, Jeeps, Nissans, Toyotas, and possibly a few others I missed in the parking lot.

23 registered on "Meet Up", but there were over 100 in attendance. I talked to Ben (Rocky Mountain Offroad) afterwards, and he stated there were 115 present.

There were 8 or 9 vendors and organizations present, including Odin Designs (Castle Rock), Rocky Mountain HAM Radio, Slee Offroad, Bomber Products, Trails Offroad, Adventure Tool Company, Stay the Trail, and Colorado Association of 4WD Clubs.

I took a lot of notes on the presentation, and think that the slideshow may get posted to Rocky Mountain Offroad site or their forum. The presentation was an overview of HAM capabilities and advantages for remote communications. Much of the Q and A focused on APRS (Automatic Packet Reporting System) technical capabilities, equipment interface, and techniques.

Presenters: John O'Day (K1JOD), Shawn Harris (K0HEY)
