Does Ford use a special kind of Antifreeze? I'm doing some work on Mom's car and the AF is red instead of green. She told me the mechanic said it was much better than Prestone.

That was the same place that wanted $465 to replace the AF overflow tank. The tank was $65 at NAPA, I don't have any idea what the other $400 would be for.

You would think people would try to do right by an 83 year old lady.

The only special antifreeze that Ford uses that I know of is the gold stuff (Zerex Gold). It is an extended life antifreeze. The only red I know of that is special is Toyota's extended life coolant.

I know that most of the newer stuff can be mixed with whatever and it doesn't matter. Just something to look into.

And yes I can totally see them trying screw your mom. Les Schwab tried to pull one over on Darcie. The front struts and front brakes needed replaced on the Mazda when she took it in to get the tires rotated. Funny thing was the next time it needed the tires rotated, I took it in (5k miles later) and low and behold, they didn't mention the front struts or brakes needing attention, in fact the guy complimented me on what good shape the car was in for the mileage. That was strike two for LS on getting my business, I didn't want there to be a third strike...

I called Jones West, the service guy there told me they transitioned to the motorcraft gold around 02, when Mom's car was made. The stuff leaking out didn't look green or red so I'm going with the Gold
