Basically I want to know if I can trust my 7k trailer to make the trip. I'm looking at a 3k mile round trip to moab next year

In the very near future I want to cut most of the body off my 80. I want to lose the roof from the windshield back. I am keeping the floor but cutting the frame at the crossmember where the rear suspension is. Going back with 11/2 and 1 inch tube. Has anyone that has done something similar weighed their 80 after?

Mine was about 4500# empty on 35s. Looked like this.

I have since cut the body off behind the front two seats and added a tube flat bed. The rear springs came up another 3/4" which makes me think I probably lost another 200-300 lbs.

This is very close to what I am going to do but I'm planning on more tube and a different shape

We did this to ours. We removed The rear body and frame after second seat, installed roll cage and tube doors(tubing is about 2 lbs per foot), removed 24" from roof and re welded hatch housing. With 5(40 inch tires, custom 2(12 inch ) base speaker box, 2 amps, and 2 tool boxes and ice chest in aluminum truck box and spare parts it weighs right at 6000 lbs(according to the girl at the dump).

Mine was just 2940lbs with all the big parts in it and a little bit of the body.

96 LX450 chassis, Aluminum 5.3 LS, 6L80 transmission, LT230 transfer case, 40" tires on beadlocks, etc.

I hope that once the body is built out it will be 3XXXlbs still.....I hope.

I have pretty good unsprung weights for the front and rear axles also. The FXJ80 chassis is well engineered and not terribly heavy. I think a lot of the weight in the factory truck is in the engine and body. They where not shy with that stuff!

Yea I was wondering where all the weight of the 80 actually was. My 80 is only 500 pounds lighter than my powerstroke excursion.

Weight is in The runnng gear. Engine 3fe, tranny, Xfer case, diff, wheels, all overbuilt, then add bumpers, cage and tools, heavy.

Some good numbers for some of that stuff from my build.

On my 96 LX450 chassis ( full float disc brake rear axle, elocker option front and rear )
Front axle unsprung weight- 370lbs ( axle/brakes and half steering/suspension weight )
Rear axle unsprung weight- 350lbs ( axle/brakes and half suspension weight )
